Beggar's Life

I like the game and the concept, but the game is frankly too slow. not sure if it is just first cycle or what, but as I burned out before reaching that point, it doesn't matter why. The dev time of every skill needs to be 2/3 as long or faster, and that is just the thing that started my burnout.

I found this a decent game to play while reading, and a rather thought-provoking game with its theme of lost philosophy. Growing stronger in this game always involves gaining clarity and becoming a reflective person. I don't think I've ever seen a game with that theme displayed so strongly. As an invisible nobody who struggles for clarity and longs for philosophy, I feel seen.

While the developer writes about the inspiration behind "Beggar's Life", this game feels like a step (or two) back in terms of content, quality of life and interface. Several core design decisions mean that the game plays like a bullet-point list on PC (do you see on the screenshots that there's a dropdown menu with literally every button?). Those decisions also mean the game doesn't respect your time. And for an incremental game, this is a horrible weakness. Most of the time spent is with the right-most menu that has way too many things happening. More than half of my screen is just empty space. UI scale? Pfft. This seems like it would 100% play better on a phone. In fact, the demo I tried months ago on my phone was much better than the full release. At this point, no, I can't recommend spending your time in "Beggar's Life". Maybe if there's a proper redesign of the interface, proper scaling and removal of every redundant button.

This is an idle game in much the same way that Kittens Game is an idle game, which is to say that it has idle elements, but requires too much micromanagement to be left along for any real significant amount of time. That said, I still really enjoyed it. There's something humbling about playing a medieval beggar trying there very best to survive the harsh realities of medieval life. Also enjoy the freedom to choose what path you want to walk, the Developer really added a lot of options to this release version. Though I've got a feeling that they're not quite done yet. The prestige system is nice, and shows a lot of promise. All in all it's a decent beggar sim game as is, but it'll only get better as the Developer continues to add more content.

This game has a really pretty concept and offers an great amount of depth. Starting out begging for food in medieval times and eventually working your way through different paths, like becoming a priest or a thief, is a great premise. Exploring the city and dealing with things like church politics gives it a very unique flavor compared to standard resource management. While the mechanics and the sheer amount of activities available are impressive, it's admittedly a bit too much for my brain. The volume of skills, resources, and tasks that require constant management gets overwhelming pretty fast. For fans of deep, complex strategy and heavy management, this is definitely a perfect fit, but it just proved to be a little too heavy for my personal taste.
