Great Conta-like game. It definitely has a contra feel but is much faster paced and with way more interesting bosses. I played it all the way through with my son.
I've played a fair amount of Contra clones, homages and spiritual successors over the decades and, though I've liked a few of them a lot, I find most of them land kind of flat. But his one isn't one of those. Along with Iron Meat, Blazing Chrome is one of the best in the sub-genre and one of the few that really made me feel like I was playing Contra on the NES or Contra III: Alien Wars on the SNES back in the day.
I'd recommend this if you're the kind of person who wants to play every Contra-like game out there. But if you're looking for a game that really captures the Contra spirit, I'd recommend Gundroid. The gameplay, music, and everything else do their job, but the game lacks a bit of polish. The weapons could be more varied, the bosses could be more creative, and the difficulty often feels like it comes from technical issues rather than good game design. Switching from fully automatic weapons to single-shot weapons was especially annoying. Overall, I had a good time with it, and some of the ideas were really cool. With a few updates and improvements, this game could turn into something really good.
Great Game. Fun game. comparable to Contra . If you like the contra series please give this a try.
Without a doubt this is the weakest of the 'big' retro Run'N'Gun games on Steam. Stop reading and play instead: Huntdown (2020), Broforce (2015), Valfaris (2019). I'm pretty sure you can get the original Metal Slug (1996) on Steam and that is a way better experience than this. I played 25 minutes of Blazing Chrome and I could not believe how badly designed it was. You can't switch characters without restarting the whole campaign (even on the continue screen, let alone between lives). The available weapons don't pack a lot of punch. You have "lives" and die in one hit, and the game seems chaotic / hard to always see when you're at risk of being hit (doesn't compare well either to indie competitors or classic Contra / Metal Slug). There are checkpoints, though, so often the best thing to do at a checkpoint is immediately die on purpose 1-3 times so you can begin that checkpoint with the full amount of lives. So stupid. Levels don't have any little design hooks or fun quirks... just waves of enemies coming at you from both directions as you run forward. Vehicle sequences are bad. Bossfights aren't fun. Even the game's 80s riffing seems... phoned in? Proud of itself despite zer…
A good run and gun, probably better starting off with this than contra, as it's more forgiving.
