About CABOUS

CABOUS is a short, first-person exploration game, based on true story. A story about memory-driven nightmares that can follow a person for the rest of their life, childhood trauma, hope, and the healing power of letting go.

In this game, you play as a young lady who has been imprisoned for a long time by the memories of her father's abandonment as a kid.  Releasing those memories will free her from this nightmare. However, as she progresses, she will be tormented by creatures of the night, which symbolize the terrible ideas and beliefs she formed as a child growing up in a dysfunctional family.

CABOUS (pronounced kābūs) is the Arabic term for a frightening nightmare.

Key Features:

  • For fans of horror/thriller games.
  • Emotional, intimate story by a one-person team.
  • Featuring a gorgeous soundtrack by acclaimed artists like Chris Zabriskie and Savfk.
  • A short game (between 30 to 45 minutes) focused on story with some maze-like platform.

However, once I pushed through its sluggish façade, embraced its disabilities- it then became quite special. Though essentially still a walking simulator where you have to navigate across a wide-open space finding memory fragments and reliving the turmoil as they take place again. There are also enemies, who… actually I haven’t a clue what happens if they get to me. Probably nothing good I bet and it's for the best seeing as they are easy to outrun! The estimated playtime of 30-45 min is true to its word since it only took me 40! It’s a one…

I didn't finish as I got caught, and ngl it can feel a little rough as we have large empty expanses to cross and a run button with quickly depleting stamina, but honestly want to thumbs up this regardless because it's got this... feel about it. You can tell Cabous is a very personal experience, and the use of space and structure to communicate a tough trek through difficult trauma is an important one. The voice work is well done, the music touches the heart and the stylistic choices (particularly how the lighting provides such a strong mood) is excellent. If you're looking for a slow contemplative experience for 30-45 minutes, definitely worth it. Just stay away from the moving lights and you'll be fine :)
