Commander: Modern War is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. This mobile app is a reskin of the developers other games... basically a simple form of asset flipping, take the same game, change the assets, then you can sell the game all over again. This obviously has no value for gamers, but unethical developers don't really care about gamers, they just want money. The've done this almost a dozen times... a dozen hex based mobile app "strategy" games all alike, but with different skins on them. Obviously my review for this is going to look a lot like my reviews for all the other "Flips" of this exact same game. There's only so many ways you can warn gamers about the same problems. And so you can see I'm not making this up, here's a list of all the copy + pastes of this app I've found so far:

Commander Bug Wars
Commander: Modern War
Commander: World War II
Commander: Zombie Wars
Expect the Unexpected
Interstellar Conquest
Lorhaven: Cursed War
Mutant Meltdown
Paths & Danger
Z Dawn
These are all reskins and reshuffles of [i]exactly the …
A pretty good example on why polish is important.
I love Advance Wars, I love Hex Empires, and I often wished for a mixture. This game plays somewhat like I would make my own game. However, it's extremely unpolished. The AI is dumb, the UI and other HUD elements aren't well made, the story is written pretty bad, the mission objectives are bad, and a bunch of other quality of life features are missing. On top of that, the other games of this develpoer seem to be reskins. If they just had bothered to polish the game for 1-2 more months, then it would be worth it. But no, they just rushed to make it as quick as possible and seperate their skin packs into different games. Really sad. It could've been the type of game I always wanted.

Commander: Modern War, developed and published by GoldenGod Games, is a turn-based strategy title that embraces the fundamentals of classic hex-based warfare while aiming to keep the experience accessible and easy to engage with. It places players in control of modern military forces across grid-based battlefields, where success depends on careful positioning, resource management, and an understanding of unit strengths and weaknesses. Rather than pursuing complexity for its own sake, the game focuses on delivering a clean and straightforward tactical loop that prioritizes clarity and consistency. The gameplay is built around a familiar structure: players take turns moving units, capturing strategic points, and engaging enemy forces. Each unit type serves a specific purpose, from infantry holding ground to armored vehicles pushing forward and aircraft providing support. Understanding how these units interact becomes the key to victory, as effective play relies on countering enemy compositions and maintaining control over important areas of the map. Capturing cities and other locations provides resources that can be used to reinforce armies, creating a steady cycle of expansion and …

5.5/10 Sci-fi TBS TLDR: Advanced Wars on a hex grid. Clumsy controls and insufficient info in tooltips suggest that it's likely a mobile port. Shabby looks... Neutral vote Good: + nice music + map editor + a couple dozen skirmish maps ("scenarios") but for some reason can only play them vs AI (so, no hotseat multiplayer which would be easy to add) So-so: +/- English localization has typos and mistranslations (from Spanish?) This makes following the tutorial difficult +/- generic story +/- graphics are too dark overall and somehow look "dirty" +/- animations of enemy units are fast and overlap, so one cannot see which unit attacked which +/- no display of predicted battle outcomes +/- can't see income per turn Bad: - selecting a unit requires 2 clicks! First, click on it to get a menu with 2 buttons: "select" and "cancel". Which is ridiculous. Left click should just select - attacking also requires 2 clicks because the first click brings up a menu. Instead, left (or right) click should just attack. Other special functions which are used much less often should require special controls like e.g. shift+click or right click or middle or whatever. As it is now, battles ends up a tiri…

I don't know if the game is ported from mobile but the controls are not at all intuitive. There are affordances in the control scheme of this type of game: the button i use to select a unit should not be same one I use to move the unit. I shouldn't have to unselect a unit before selecting another. That's probably only a problem because we made the same mouse button do everything. The story is a tad generic. Oh the alliance is "capitalistic" and the coallition is totalitarian? with that said, I don't regret the purchase. Buy it on sale on a bundle and expect a few hours of turn-based tactics. The product is bug-free, which nowadays is not the given it should be.
