Compadrone: Land Wars

Compadrone Land Wars – imagine a bullet hell with tower defense sprinkles… and then remove most of the variety that makes the genre fun. Enemies? Few. Weapons? Meh. Bonuses? Don’t get your hopes up. Controls? Sure, you can use mouse or controller, but there’s a reason every other game in the genre uses WASD – it just works better. Camera? Let’s just say sometimes you’ll run face-first into a horde because you literally couldn’t see them. Fun, right? Is it entertaining for a while? Yeah. Is it anywhere near Halls of Torment or Brotato? Not even close. And don’t get me started on the Steam achievements – grindy to the point where even achievement junkies like me are like: “Nah, I’m good.” Video: https://youtu.be/h7vyM2y5sMM

This would have been a somewhat acceptable Flash game, fifteen years ago. The player ship/drone follows the mouse and shoots at everything within range automatically. You can upgrade your ship but only by tiny percentages in a game that is not difficult to win. The opening levels can be completed by not interacting, and then by moving the mouse slightly at the end of the level to pull in the drops from the enemies that died near to you. There is no strategy. There are towers but there is no tower defence, they're just extra guns. There is bare competence here, in that I didn't encounter a crash in the eight minutes I played, but this is barely a video game and you should not buy it.

Completely unbalanced and boring. You are so overpowered right out of the gate that there isn't any difficultly. It takes so much resources to buy anything you just stand around doing nothing. Also tried to lose on purpose and couldn't. The controller control scheme isn't very good. You don't move your drone you move the targeting circle and your drone follows.

Gameplay is fun for a moment, but the camera just feels bad. When moving down towards the bottom of the screen the character moves faster than the camera causing it to be at the bottom of the screen moving in a direction where you can't see enemies. The Choices in drones may make them seem like there is some amount of difference, but a closer look at the stat changes show very little. The final ship unlocked is very similar to the third one you start with access to. The weapons seem decent, but the other upgrades are quite unappealing. Since when is just one item giving a 3% boost that costs as much of a weapon actually useful.

IDK, on one hand it works... but the more I played, the more I got bored with the loop. I also noticed it was just taking an extremely long time to get through a round. While other similar games take the same amount of time, none are this dull. I wanted to give this a Positive/Mixed review, but I think this is probably only worth about a dollar.. Really wouldn't go out of your way to buy this one.
