Coolmath Games: The Game

A charming little game with an appropriate nostalgia for point and click puzzle games, the cool math games of years past we all whiled away whatever hours we could on while we were in elementary school, and a very genuine affection for why people make and like videogames. There's replay value in here, too, because even though I beat the game in under an hour, I didn't beat everything, and I know the ending can go multiple ways. The best and worst feature of the game is that there's no save system. Instead, there's a password feature, where the game gives you a password to enter to return to different points in the game. I appreciate the commitment to the bit.

Coolmath Games: The Game is a really charming point and click adventure that I enjoyed because it feels like a love letter to the website that inspired it. I play as a new Coolmath Games intern, and instead of simply playing games, I am helping the team prepare one for launch. I liked the idea immediately because the game constantly turns familiar website elements into part of the story. The gameplay is built around exploring the office, talking to the staff and completing small tasks. I can interact with objects, collect items and use them in different places to solve puzzles. The mechanics are simple, but I enjoyed looking around because there are so many little details and references hidden throughout the environment. The dialogue system is another highlight. Conversations give me choices that can affect how the characters see me, and I liked that the responses help define my relationship with the people in the office. The humor works particularly well because the characters are inspired by the real people behind Coolmath Games, giving the whole thing a playful self aware feeling.
