About D: The Game

The story begins in 1997. It's the dead of night in the city of Los Angeles, and there has been a mass murder at a general hospital on the outskirts of downtown. The perpetrator is the director of the hospital, Richter Harris. He has shut himself up in the hospital and taken a number of patients as hostages, leaving the police helpless and unable to move in. Richter's only daughter, Laura Harris, after hearing the situation, rushes to Los Angeles from San Francisco, and drives alone to the tragic scene at the hospital ground. Upon entering the hospital Laura finds herself transported to an old mansion, while the disembodied voice of her father pleads with her to leave. Nevertheless she must press forward to save her father and herself.

✦ AI summary

D is a historically significant survival horror game from the 90s that impresses players with its cinematic presentation, surreal atmosphere, and experimental storytelling that still holds up as an intriguing experience today. However, players consistently note that the game suffers from slow pacing, restrictive controls, and limited gameplay depth, making it more of a fascinating artifact than a fully engaging modern experience. The game is best appreciated by those interested in horror history and narrative-driven adventures rather than action-focused players.

you will probably hate how slow it is and feel like you'd never want to commit the time to play it without a guide. But it is worth a play just to experience it once.

D: The Game is a unique horror adventure that occupies an important place in gaming history, blending cinematic storytelling with psychological terror in a way that was far ahead of its time. Developed by WARP and published on Steam by Nightdive Studios and Throwback Entertainment, the game presents an unsettling narrative that focuses more on atmosphere and mystery than traditional action-oriented gameplay. Even decades after its original release, it remains a fascinating experience for players interested in classic survival horror and experimental storytelling. The story follows Laura Harris, a young woman drawn into a nightmare after her father, a respected hospital director, becomes the prime suspect in a shocking mass murder. What begins as a straightforward investigation quickly evolves into a disturbing journey through twisted memories, dark family secrets, and supernatural horrors. The narrative constantly shifts between reality and hallucination, creating an unpredictable experience that keeps players questioning what is truly happening. The game’s strongest achievement lies in how it gradually reveals its mysteries, encouraging players to uncover clues and piece together…

Back before Windows 98 was released, my family finally got their first PC from some shady shop that disappeared as quickly as it popped up. The PC came with a beta version of Windows 98 and some hacked games like Diablo and Carmageddon. We went shopping shortly after and picked up a few CD-ROM games: Ultimate Doom, Shivers II, Prisoner of Ice, Myst, and D. At the time, the graphics of D blew me away. It was like playing a movie! I played through it many times, got my girlfriend to play it, etc. I did get D2 on Dreamcast but didn't like it as much and didn't play it for long. It fell to the back of my memories until recently, when scrolling through my Steam library and seeing it in there. I loaded it up and let my 13-year-old son give it a go. He played through twice; first time he ran out of time (like we all do), but he stuck with it and did well - until the last decision, when he got the bad ending. He gave up after that, but overall enjoyed his time with it. Surprising, but he does appreciate all sorts of retro games. Anyhow, thanks for keeping this game alive. And thanks to Valve and co. for letting it run on Linux, as I switched back in 2002.

An extremely surreal adventure! You are the daughter of a doctor that has gone mad to the point of starting a massacre in the hospital building he is working on. As soon as you enter the hospital to try to stop your farther, you are warped into another world... A world that seems to be the mind palace of your farther. You have about two hours to get to father before its too late to escape the other world. This game is very slow pace and a bit tricky with its controls, having the character that you control move at snails pace and very fixed/restricted. It was tricky to get around but was manageable. Please consult the game manual before playing to get a better understanding and enjoyment of them game. The whole vibe of the game was very intriguing and surreal at times with its imagery. Its amazing how they were able to capture all this weird effects with the limitations at the time. The best I can describe it is very David Lynch filmography. Honestly an interesting play! Does need to be played in one sitting!

it's a very important part of horror history to cognize that the most bloodcurdling scenario a game dev could conceive in '95 was getting terrorized by hallucinations of a floating bald head
