Dark Roll: Free Kick Challenge is a really unusual football game because I am not actually controlling a footballer. I am controlling an orb and trying to score free kicks by rolling, bouncing and curving it past the goalkeeper. The idea sounds simple at first, but there is more to it than just aiming at the goal. I have to get used to the physics, work out how much power to use and figure out how much curve I need. It gives the game a nice little skill based feel that makes me want to keep trying when I miss a shot. The single player challenges are where I spend most of my time. There are a lot of challenges to work through, and they gradually give me more difficult situations to deal with. I like that the game does not throw complicated controls at me because the difficulty mostly comes from getting better at the actual kicking mechanics. Once I start understanding how the orb moves, I can try different angles and shots instead of simply aiming directly at the goal. There are also more than 20 different orbs to unlock, with differences in things like size, speed, power, braking, jumping and swerve. The orb system gives me another reason to keep playing.
