Dawn of the Monsters is a pretty awesome beat 'em up that deserves more recognition. The story revolves around Giant Mechas and Kaijus fighting more Kaijus (called Nephilim) that come out of "nowhere" in big cities, so the premise is already good. There is some plot going on regarding big corpos, where the Nephilim come from, and even some character development. Everything feels pretty much like anime/manga as detailed in the game's description. It's enough to keep you entertained. The cutscenes are manga-based, and all the dialogues are dubbed competently. I recommend playing it with Japanese voiceover for a more authentic Kaiju experience. As almost all bmups, the mechanics are straightforward and simple, but with a few shenanigans to spice things up. The game has a "card" system of sorts (called DNA Augments) that lets you select upgrades, and you get these upgrades by getting good scores in the levels. Most levels are very easy to S+. There is also an "execution" mechanic that allows dramatic kills for health. Sadly, it's pretty underwhelming, and only the Megadon executions are cool. The combat is impactful and intense, cities are destructible, and you can also pick up build…

Easy 9/10 from this Kaiju fan who played this entirely on Steam Deck as is Absolute love letter to all Kaiju and Super Robot universes out there! The story isn’t too hard to get through and gave me around 10 hours to complete. Around 20 hours with all steam achievements, trials and in-game challenges completed. I have not finished my New Game+ play through yet. Dawn of the Monsters is a side scroll Beat’m Up with some RPG elements. You play as one of 4 (5 w/DLC) Kaiju/Robots saving the world from evil kaiju. Each playable character has their own unique moves but share all RPG upgrades you obtain. DotM does have couch co-op but I played it entirely solo. The story is fully voiced and feels perfect for this genre! There’s no deep levels of writing but the story has its own twists and world/lore building that leaves it open to a much wanted sequel from this fan. At this time I have obtained S+ for all Story Mode levels and trials, and finished Toronto in New Game+. The most difficult parts of the game came from getting through Arcade mode w/all Characters and a few of the Trials. One Arcade mode achievement asks to play with all characters and I am frankly not great pla…

No wonder earth is in trouble if we are transporting four behemoths in and out of orbit in between missions. There's a lot of talking but not a lot to say. Soundtrack is practically missing. Combat is quite repetitive and it's the same few pallet swapped enemies throughout. Attacks aren't weighty enough either, so it feels more like normal sized guys in costume fighting inside a model city.

If you like Kaiju's then this is an interesting one because there is rarely one that's a beat em up. Most of these types are usually 1 on 1 fighting games or a simulator. Then you have games like Rampage where you destroy cities. The only one I can think of that was remotely a Kaiju beat em up was King of the Monster 2. And you could barely classify that. What makes this game interesting is that there is no jump button. The monsters move slow and lethargic. So it plays a lot slower then most beat em ups. But that's not a bad thing as it's something you would already imagine. The big human and robot characters move a little quicker and have faster attacks. Pros 1. There is a decent amount of moves in the game and each characters plays pretty differently. 2. The augments are random generated and base on level performance. You can pick to help build up your characters and play style. 3. You get 3 rage attacks and each character gets a powerful cataclysm attack. 4. You can unlock a number of cool color palettes by selling augments you don't use. 5. The story is interesting enough with some plot twist and you get to learn more about the nephilim. Cons 1. Aside from the sh…
