Единственный шутер в ДнД-сеттинге и с оммажем к правилам этой настолки. И справляется со своим назначением отлично. Разнообразие уровней (с вертикальностью!), врагов (многие из которых даже не упоминаются в других играх!) и предметов (многие из которых буквально меняют правила игры, например, как кольцо левитации) держат до самого конца. Управление, увы, слегка тракторное; не хватает анимаций оружия ближнего боя (как, скажем, в Amulets and Armor того же времени); ну и некоторые причуды движка (особенно в неприятном платформинге) добавляют горечи в общие впечатления. Однако имеющимися средствами - музыкой, визуалом, целой палитрой уровней, классическим ДнДшным сюжетом и атмосферой ранних приключений этой настольной игры - Dathkeep прочно отваевывает свою позицию в моем списке игр на перепрохождение.

Even though I grew up with keyboard only controls, I can't bring myseld to play the game even longer. It is sort of frustrating to try to navigate through the narrow corridors, since most of the floor of the beginning area is...well, ice. So you slide and slide and can't have a proper look for navigation purposes. Makes me wonder if it just aged badly or if the game was not good even back when it came out.

Maybe the worst Dungeon Crawler. Buggy, trash controls, crashes and almost unplayable

DeathKeep is a fascinating piece of Dungeons & Dragons video game history, built around a style of first-person dungeon crawling that feels dramatically different from modern interpretations of the franchise. Developed by Lion Entertainment and published on Steam by SNEG, it favors direct exploration, combat, traps, puzzles, and maze-like environments rather than dialogue-heavy storytelling or complicated party management. Its design is undeniably dated, but there is still something appealing about entering an enormous hostile dungeon with limited guidance and discovering what waits beyond each corridor. The premise wastes little time establishing the adventure. An evil Necromancer has escaped from an icy prison and begun spreading destruction throughout the surrounding lands. The player ventures into the frozen wilderness to confront his forces and eventually eliminate the threat. The narrative is primarily a framework for exploration rather than a deeply developed storyline, so players expecting extensive conversations, companions, or branching decisions will find DeathKeep relatively straightforward. Whoever thought it would be fun to make the characters slide with no real counterplay to it along with the person who thought it'd be great idea to rerelease the game as is should be tried at Haga and be prohibited from even touching any electrical object. With each year I'm more and more glad that 90s are over, even if last 3 years mostly outweight all the previous atrocities, the fact that some people have fond memories with those eldritch horrors is mindblowing. If even Bethesda can rerelease their games in more playable and 21st century friendly way, you know you went for the nostalgia cash grab. While the videos are top notch and the game itself looks good (don't judge me, I have a weird taste...) playing it or even watching as someone does can be used as a torture method in Guantanamo. I could reach complete enlightment, transcend the material realm, name every person that ever lived and find the missing link in human evolution, just to avoid ever coming back to it.
