Demon Castle Survivor

A really fun roguelike shmup. As you progress through the stages, you earn xp to spawn your powerups, and you also earn gold, which is used on permanent meta upgrades between runs. It's relatively basic, only 6 meta upgrades, and only 8 stages in the standard game (plus a hardcore mode afterwards), but it has a certain charm that has kept me glued to it for several hours (so far). It's fairly light-hearted, and overall, just a fun time, and the difficulty scales in a fair way, so as you earn your permanent upgrades, you WILL beat the game if you stick with it. I'm really glad that I played this one, and for free, there is no reason you shouldn't give it a go if this kind of game is your thing.

Short, fun, and nostalgic. I really enjoyed the 80s classic feel of this game. I cleared the game and finished all achievements in about 6 hours. It’s a bit short, but since it's free, it’s definitely worth a try!

Demon Castle Survivors trades the cold vacuum of space for a gritty fantasy landscape, proving you don't need a cockpit to survive a bullet-hell "shmup." Instead of a starfighter, you control a grounded hero—bearing a striking resemblance to Link from Ocarina of Time—as you navigate waves of enemies on foot. Tactical Combat & Arsenal The core combat is both familiar and uniquely tactical. Your primary offense is your sword, which you "shoot" forward automatically. A key mechanic allows you to hold a button to cease fire, giving you a layer of control over your timing. The secondary weapons are where the game truly opens up. You can find boomerangs that provide a circular defensive perimeter, and arrows or spears that significantly widen your attack spread. Most impressive is the inclusion of a floating "option"—a familiar sight for Gradius fans—that mimics your movements and adds extra firepower to your volley. Demon Castle Survivor is a simple top down survival game that feels like it is built around the classic idea of surviving as long as possible while enemies keep filling the screen. I control a hero moving around different arenas while attacks happen automatically, so most of my attention goes into movement, positioning and choosing the right upgrades. The goal is to survive each stage until the timer runs out, then move on to the next one. It is a straightforward setup, but I think it works well for a game that is completely free and wants to get me into a run quickly. The combat is probably the part I enjoy most. I am constantly moving through groups of enemies, collecting gems and choosing temporary skills that change how my character fights during that run. The available skills include things like arrows, swords, spears and boomerangs, so I can try different combinations instead of having exactly the same setup every time. I like that the skills disappear when the run ends because it gives each attempt its own progression and makes me think about what combination will work best in the situation I have been given.
