About Descent: FreeSpace – The Great War
Includes the original Freespace and the Silent Threat mission pack
They arrived by the thousands, suddenly and without warning.
The heartless Shivans emerged through subspace near Earth, harboring technology light years ahead of anything seen before. They made no attempt to communicate. They did not respond to your heralds. They simply attacked--and destroyed everything in their path.
As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat--just changed.
This is the beginning of The Great War.
- 30 branching single-player missions and 20 multiplayer missions
- 3 unique species, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, tactics, ships, and fighting characteristics.
- Over 40 jaw-dropping real-time ships with dynamic lighting, stunning effects, animation and unprecedented levels of realism and detail.
- Create your own detailed missions using 'FRED", the fully-featured mission editor.

Descent: Freespace – The Great War (including Silent Threat) For me, Descent: Freespace – The Great War was the second space flight sim I ever played—Wing Commander being the first, and still my all-time favorite. That said, Freespace came very close. I spent a lot of time completing its missions and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I originally owned the game on DVD along with its expansion, Silent Threat. Unfortunately, the disc eventually stopped working. So when I saw it available on Steam, I had to get it again. Even today, the game holds up surprisingly well. The graphics and gameplay still offer a solid experience. Sure, there are mods available to upgrade the visuals, but there's something special about playing the original version. It brings back great memories of hours spent in epic space battles. It’s definitely a game worth playing. It’s a shame that after Freespace 2, we never got a Freespace 3.2 found this helpful
I LOVE this game. It has ruined space fighting and aerial combat games for me because it just raised the bar so high, also has a good story. I used to play it all the time way back in the day, I had very few computer games and this was my most played game. I'm gonna try to get it to work with my PC when I get stuff up and running again. This game is an absolute gem. Highly recommend.2 found this helpful
There are some major glitches on several missions. After days of searching, uninstalling and reinstalling, even restarting the campaign entirely from scratch...Here is the fix I found (in a GOG forum, of all places): *Mission 6 (Paving the Way)*: •Objective: escort the Galatea through an asteroid field to a jump node. •Bug: Galatea gets to the node, then stops, turns, and gets "stuck" (won't enter the node) until it is obliterated by asteroids/Shivan fighters. •Fix: Posted October 03, 2021 by user Why485 "In my experimentation with this bug, I've also found another workaround, albeit an ugly one that requires you to be a bit conscious of the mission's scripting. If you enable time compression (Shift+Comma, Shift+Period by default) just before the ship hits the waypoints, it'll usually work. This works too when the ship gets stuck on a waypoint to get them unstuck, but it can still take them a few (real-time) seconds to align and then complete the waypoint. You can check how close the ship is to their waypoints by targeting them. Usually it's a friendly ship on your escort list, so you can target them quickly with E. When a friendly is targeted, it'll show a …2 found this helpful
Good memories, still fun
I played this game with my brother back in 1998. We had a joystick for the family PC and it was one of the coolest things ever. I was just a little kid at the time and was terrible but it was fun anyway. I purchased this version on Steam back in 2020 and could not get it to run on Windows 10 and was very sad about it. I hid it in my Steam library and forgot about it until a few days ago. I installed it on my Windows 11 machine and it works great. Its making me want to get a modern flight stick to play. I was immediately transported back to 1998, albeit with better control skills, and am living up the nostalgia. It still holds up today as one of the best space flight dogfighting sims ever made. The weapons, the ships, the story, the controls, the squad commands, everything was top notch, even to today's standards. R.I.P Volition, this classic will live in my heart forever. Thanks for the memories!
Great classic game with epic story line
