Detective Hayseed - Hollywood

Comedy point-and-click adventure made by a Czech studio. It's the sixth entry in the Polda series (popular in that country), but is stand-alone except for a few minor references I didn't get. 3d characters are "disguised" as 2d or made more cartoony by textures while the backgrounds are hand drawn by airbrush (not sure what that means). The mix worked well enough, and I liked the clunky slapstick animations. Lots of thinly veiled parodies of celebrities from the 80s and 90s. Likenesses were good enough and were part of the game's appeal. Good interface, but I bemoan the one-click interactions without different icons removing challenge and almost playing the game automatically. I very much liked having the objectives listed and updated. The English verbs and nouns used were sometimes wrong in an otherwise good translation that showed effort. All traditional inventory puzzles, no out-of-context Myst puzzles except maybe one. I liked them. No optional interactions or comments if an item was not the proper one to use, and I missed that. The developers seemed obsessed with toilet humor. There are several scenes where we are forced to look at, play with, or talk about human or animal feces. Our hero repeatedly passes gas throughout the game. But the most annoying part is when you stand still for a minute, he heaves this very loud sigh every 30 seconds or so. It's louder than the rest of the sound so it's extremely irritating. Also, there are several scenes where we hurt or are cruel to animals. At one point, our" hero" handcuff a horse's legs and then giggles when he can't get up. We just left him there looking very distressed and confused. Sure it's just a game, but it didn't sit well with me. Not sure if that kind of thing is funny in Czechoslovakia, but it isn't funny to me. Also, the dialogue was apparently translated and voiced by a computer, so there are unnatural expressions and incorrect pronunciations. The "rapper" in the jail is the worst because he uses slang and abbreviations that makes no sense and the computer actor spells out some of the words since it didn't know how to pronounce them. After years of only watching playthroughs I finally got to play the full game and absolutely loved it. 100% achievements took so many tries but no matter what I loved going through it more than once despite it being a story game. All the references made my day. Vitonka THE QUEEN!!

So there's some pros and cons to this particular title based entirely on how old you are and who you're likely to remember from Hollyweird. The cameos are very much dated but as a veteran and a fan of the Leisure Suit Larry Series I appreciate that era of humour, and so as a consequence I not only LOVED my time playing this game but enjoyed seeing the Celebrities. It feels like this is a game that should've come out back then, and would've fit right in at the time but I think that a lot of the jokes are going to fly over the heads of younger players who aren't going to understand who's-who.
