About Dorke and Ymp
Dorke and Ymp is an unreleased Super Nintendo game developed back in the early 1990's by a Swedish company called Norse. The game was developed with unlicensed tools made by the game programmers. Unfortunately the game failed to acquire a publisher and was never released.
Luckily we found the original programmer, composer, and artist and we acquired the source code at about 50% of the game. We worked on the game for over a year to finally complete it.
This are the new features and updates done to the game:
•Over 100 Bugs and Crashing bugs fixed!
•Added a whole new world and levels (Volcano)
•Added Menu, cut-scenes and ending.
•Implemented password system
•Designed, developed and implemented boss fights (4) according to the original game story.
•Organized the game to be able to play with continuity.
•Over 40 levels and 10 hours of gameplay!
This game is a puzzle adventure platformer in which you got to help Dorke (and Ymp) to do some errands for your evil Master Wizard in exchange of training you and teaching you his magic spells.
The game is very very hard and challenging, but hardcore games will have fun playing it!
What a messy 16-bit game. I was hoping for more badass experience but I end up with this abomination of a game. Game did not work from the launcher so I had to start it directly from game files. First of all controller doesn't work. Gameplay feels kinda bland. Levels might be not the worst but how you shoot and climb is a disaster. You have your floating Ymp companion that apparently don't leave you even when taking dump. Gameplay consists of shooting rabbits and avoiding other nuisances. No screen filters like CRT effect. Besides that it plays like your usual emulator game.
6 found this helpful
Dorke and Ymp is one of those games where you’re not entirely sure what’s going on, but you’re too busy dodging enemies and grabbing loot to care. You play as two tiny mischief-makers, one’s good with magic, the other’s good with smashing stuff and together you stumble through levels that look like they were drawn straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. The gameplay? Imagine if an old-school action platformer had a baby with a puzzle game. You swap between the two characters, solve simple puzzles, whack enemies, and try not to fall into bottomless pits (which I did… often). The controls take a little getting used to, but once you figure them out, it’s a breezy, colorful romp. The art style is charming in that “90s console game that time forgot” way, and the soundtrack fits the goofy energy perfectly. It’s not here to reinvent the wheel, it’s here to give you a few hours of lighthearted fun and maybe a little nostalgia kick. 8/10 — would send Dorke into danger while Ymp stands back and judges.3 found this helpful
I'm not going to lie, I had never heard of this game until I saw it in a Fanatical bundle and figured, "Why not?" Because it was so cheap. I'd like to recommend this game and say it's just "not for everyone" but decided after beating it that it was too annoying at times to deserve a recommendation. Instead, I'd like to say it's a light no, but you can think of it more as a mixed review. The controls are clunky, which is fine because what else would you expect from a game that was originally supposed to be on the SNES? The art style/graphics are... fine, for the most part, but the first world is really visually and mechanically boring. The game really starts to feel, not good, but better once you get to the second world. The level design feels LESS random, and the worlds themselves actually look unique. All of that considered, I WOULD have recommended the game, but then I spent about two hours on World 4-8, and my thoughts changed because it highlights what are, in my opinion, two of the game's worst issues. Those issues being the game never explains anything and most of the levels feel randomly put together by a seven-year-old trying out Super Mario Maker for the first time. …
Dorke and Ymp is a remarkable revival of a forgotten Super Nintendo-era project that finally reaches players after spending decades as an unfinished title. Developed by Norse and Piko Interactive, and published by Piko Interactive LLC together with Bleem!, the game serves as both a playable piece of gaming history and a genuine retro platforming adventure. Rather than releasing an abandoned prototype, the team painstakingly restored the original source code, repaired countless technical issues, expanded unfinished content, and added entirely new areas, bosses, cinematics, and a proper conclusion. The result feels like discovering a lost cartridge from the 1990s that has finally been completed with the care it originally deserved. The adventure follows Dorke and his unusual companion Ymp, who undertake dangerous missions for a sinister wizard while pursuing the dream of becoming powerful magic users themselves. The story embraces a lighthearted fantasy tone without overwhelming players with lengthy dialogue or complicated lore. Instead, the narrative unfolds naturally through exploration and progression, allowing the gameplay to remain the primary focus. This straightforward approa…
Trying to pronounce the title feels like having a stroke, let alone trying to play it.
