Elowen's Light

I haven't finished it yet, but I want to get this in while I'm between restarts to let you all know that whoever made this hasn't finished it either. The game has some great art direction. It looks and sounds great. But it's bare bones and half baked. Once you get past the start menu don't expect to see it again until you shut the game down by manually closing the window it's running in. And you'll most likely need to restart because the controls frequently start to bug out. I thought it might have been a controller issue but the keyboard did the same thing to me. I've also had all the terrain disappear on me and the player character fall into a solid colored void with no escape. Normally falling doesn't do anything but waste your time in the game. Which is good AND bad because the controls make the platforming a chore at times. Having a jump button and also having up make you jump is a bad idea and there's been countless times with a controller that I'm making short unwanted hops off of and into things I'm trying to avoid. It's got a casual relaxed vibe that it ruins for itself with these small but constant irritations and it's a real shame. Definitely not worth the full price.

Short and sweet, adorable game. Relaxed but has its challenges, I'd love to see another game in this world that's more in depth, recommended on sale price.

Very basic but okay over all.

I really wish I could give this game a thumbs up, but there are so many issues that caused it to just fall short of that mark. Graphically it's super pretty, I love the character design (but I'm a sucker for fae styling anyway), and cutscene art is really nice too. The story is pretty nice too, and it's very satisfying to finish it and restore Briony. I also liked the avoidance style platforming, and the game will guilt you into avoiding all the animals you can for them to give you magic. The game loop is basically collect magic from either items in the world or by safely passing animals without touching or hurting them, then spend magic to unlock ways to get magic faster or gain new abilities. A few npc's in the world will also give you abilities if you find them. Some house unlocks will trigger cutscenes for Elowen and Briony's backstory, and explain why they are in exile and Briony lost her body. The biggest problems are the default controls and the overall structure. Whether it's because I run on Linux or because it's actually the default controls, up was being considered a jump on the controller. I haven't seen this used since the DOS and Amiga days! - The platforming controls suck - "You can't die" doesn't equal "stress-free" - The house overlay is visually confusing - There isn't enough to do - I didn't follow the story (because it popped up at weird times) - What's the deal with the shrooms?
