About ENIGMA:

The world is afflicted with a mysterious disease known as "The Enigma."
Chester, infected with this disease, finds himself washed onto a lonely island, Carlyle.
As he is being given a tour of the island by the girl who nursed him back to health, Chester finds himself feeling that something is off.
There are no doctors from the mainland. Not only is there no information of the outside world, but the inhabitants seem entirely oblivious of the worldwide epidemic.
---It's as if this place has been completely removed from the rest of the world.
After a while, Chester finds a conspicuous white forest in the middle of a green expanse.
"That forest devours people. That's what I believe."
The forest's name is Enigma.
The same as the disease consuming his body.

Features:
An unusual story; no romances
If you do a bit of research, you might notice ooh! Steam cards, yes, and ooh! Steam achievements, yes. Look a little closer at the achievements, and you'll see they seem based on three characters, with each character having a couple of variations on a theme. Interestingly, none of them are romantic interests. And while the protagonist is a guy, so too are two of the focal characters. In some ways, I found the story a bit confusing. It seemed to me that the writer didn't fully understand what they were trying to accomplish - some elements of the plot either remained not fully thought out or explained, other times I wondered at the direction of the story. Indeed, I can't even rightly call any of the endings a 'good' ending, and the game has an overall sadness to it. Even the ending that cues the rolling credits doesn't really live up to expectations. Part of the problem may be the running idea (trying to avoid spoilers here) that the island's inhabitants are often likened to cattle. They are all emotionally stunted, as you'll find out if you play it. I don't think Enigma will ever rate very highly for me. There are a plethora of reasons fo…2 found this helpful

ENIGMA: is a story-driven visual novel created by Uzumeya and brought to a wider audience by Fruitbat Factory. Released on Steam in 2016, the game positions itself as a mystery adventure built around branching narratives, philosophical themes, and emotional character arcs. Like many titles in the visual novel genre, the primary gameplay consists of reading dialogue and making choices that influence the direction of the story. However, what sets ENIGMA: apart is the way it intertwines its romantic and personal drama with a larger mystery surrounding a mysterious illness and an isolated island community. The story centers on Chester, a man suffering from a deadly disease known as “Enigma.” This illness has begun spreading across the world and appears to be fatal, leaving those infected with little hope of survival. Facing an uncertain future and limited time, Chester embarks on a journey that ultimately leads him to a remote island named Carlyle. The island appears strangely untouched by the global crisis, existing in quiet isolation from the outside world. When Chester arrives there after a mysterious accident, he quickly realizes that the place may hold secrets connected not only …
The real enigma is why I played so long. I ended up with a lot more questions than answers, and at the first ending it left so many loose ends open that it felt unsatisfying. I found out that there's multiple endings, but I honestly have no desire to go back through just to eke out whatever missing pieces of lore weren't provided the first time. To me, that is a massive oversight in a game. Almost nothing about the story is ever explained, which left me with a very hollow play experience.
Not the best visual novel I've played but definitely worth your money

I've actually been looking forward to playing it more than 5 years ago but I couldn't purchase any game back then. I am glad I still remembered I wanted to play Enigma. This is one of the first steam games I've ever purchased!!! I don't regret it!!!! I was so engrossed in the story (first run,
lauro
ending
3
) I actually felt some despair when the credits started rolling because I thought it was just an introduction to the next part of the story but then I thought it was getting kind of long for an introduction then realised these were the end credi…
