Find the Birds

I do not recommend

"Find the Birds" is a mobile app, but at least it's not one of those nasty cash shop infested scams... this is a free educational game about birds and conservationalism, but there's not much to this iPhone experience. What do you do in the game? You explore different locations to find birds, receive points for finding them, exchange points for tools, take photos using a camera tool, and store those photos in a simulated album, all in the format of an Adobe Flash tier side scrolling browser-like game (but made for iPhones). This is a mobile app... it doesn't matter if this was ported to PC before or after the app store release, or even if this didn't even make it to the app stores. This is built for the absolutely lowest of all gaming platforms and must be judged as such... it's not going to give you a cutting edge PC gaming experience. That alone is enough to disqualify this from any recommendation. We don't spend thousands building gaming rigs so that we can pretend they're iPhones and play iPhone games and mobile apps. [i]Find the Birds[/i] is an accurate bird-watching simulator for birders and environmentalists alike! With easy-to-learn mechanics and plenty of helpful and educational instruction along the way, each objective is clear and simple to accomplish. 1) Click on birds to earn points that can be used to purchase necessary task-related items in the shops. 2) Not all birds are worth the same amount of points. 3) Some birds can be more quickly farmed for points than others if you sit and wait for them to come back for another animation loop. In fact, the game wants you to take the time to observe the birds you find (just like in real life), rewarding you with new information each time you click on one. Clicking on a bird once will unlock its fact card, but it will take 7 sightings (ie. times clicking on a bird) to complete a bird's field guide card - name/stats/description, photos, distribution, audio (bird call), behavior, conservation, and video. The #/7 on the card's upper right corner lets you know how many times you have clicked the same bird! It's great to see not only an educational game, but one that can teach people about the environment. The game itself feels a little amateur and clunky, but still put together well enough to achieve its purpose. So far the only thing that had me confused was the infocards of all the birds, even if they were of the same time, said "1/7" in the corner. I interpreted that as 1 out of 7, but now that I'm writing this review, I wonder if that's meant to be some kind of in-game dating system? Dunno. This developer has made other games - Find the Whales and Find the Energy - and I've added those to my library as well.
