BirdLingo: A birdsong learning game is one of those educational games that I think actually understands how to make learning feel like playing. Instead of giving me a pile of information to memorize, it lets me explore different natural habitats and identify birds from their songs. I found the whole experience surprisingly relaxing, especially because the game feels more like a peaceful nature activity than a traditional quiz. The main gameplay is based around listening carefully and choosing which bird produced the sound I am hearing. At first I get more help, but that assistance gradually decreases as I become more comfortable with the calls. I liked this approach because it gives me time to build confidence instead of immediately throwing difficult recordings at me. The repetition is also handled well. I hear different recordings of similar calls across different habitats, which helps me recognize patterns rather than simply memorizing one exact sound. I particularly liked the challenges where several birds can be heard together because they force me to focus on individual sounds while there is more going on around me. Absolutely adorable and DID help me recognise the calls of the local birds more easily, especially the ones that made me go "oh I have heard that one before!" but didn't know what it was. I am very glad over the fact they have two different recordings for each bird as well. Would love more language options for the common names, but given the simplicity of the project I understand why that's not a thing.

Very nice little game for learning and while it could feature so many more birds—especially ducks, sandpipers, geese, but also more species in general. I wish there was a Latin version, the English names can be confusing when translating to other languages. Some birds are very region-specific, some can be found almost everywhere in Europe and beyond. No.. But overall, I enjoyed the experience and it's a good starting point for when you don't know anything about birds, plus it's free so no reason not to try it out.

"BirdLingo: A birdsong learning game" is a well intentioned mobile app that's been published on Steam. This is one for ornithologists and nature lovers everywhere as it quizzes you on various European birdsongs. Charming, but also, the whole thing looks like a 1990's Multimedia CD-ROM thing, or a website (I guess it's equally appropriate it's published as a mobile app). Unfortunately we're not here on PC for what basically amounts to glorified webpages, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. I didn't spend thousands building my gaming rig for this. Let's talk about pricing and the actual value this has for gamers. Most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's usually some kind of monetisation, from nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, to any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded.
