Review: Folklands – A Pleasant but Empty Experience https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcdkNY_JH70&t=67s Folklands is one of those games that, at first glance, promises a relaxing city-building experience set in a charming medieval-inspired world. And in some ways, it delivers exactly that. The visuals are cozy, the music is soothing, and the act of placing down buildings and watching your small settlement grow has a satisfying rhythm. For the first couple of hours, I genuinely enjoyed my time with it. Unfortunately, once the initial charm wears off, the cracks begin to show. The most glaring issue is the lack of content. The game feels like a framework for something greater that never fully arrives. After a short while, it becomes clear that Folklands doesn’t really have much to offer beyond its surface. There’s no meaningful progression, no surprises, and ultimately, not enough incentive to keep playing. Another drawback is the camera system. While the game’s architecture and building designs are pleasant, you can’t zoom in close enough to truly appreciate the details. This feels like a missed opportunity, as part of the joy in city builders comes from admiring the tiny worlds yo…24 found this helpful
Started with a humble village, hoped to build a thriving kingdom… ended up endlessly chopping trees and shuffling resources while the UI pretended it was teaching me something. 🌲 Cute pixels, cozy vibes, but depth and challenge vanish faster than my villagers’ attention spans. Follow my curator page for more shallow empires, endless tree chopping, and worlds where pixels are smarter than rulers! 🏚️🌲✨ https://store.steampowered.com/curator/42602807-Osiris-Reviews/23 found this helpful
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! It is one of the most unpolished city builders I've seen. There is not enough content to justify even 1/4 of the price. To make matters worse it's insanely horribly optimized. The longer you play the more lag you get until you are literally playing in single digit FPS. The absolute kicker is that by the time you complete the tutorial thanks to all the lag it will be beyond the 2 hour playtime window for a refund.... Save yourself a headache and some money and remove this from your wishlist...8 found this helpful
My overall thoughts on the game is that it's pretty solid. However, there are some things I do dislike for example how you have to find the button to allow your builders to upgrade the homes which took me forever to find. Something like that I feel like should be automatically set as default. Another is the low amount of tools at the start which does hinder and restrict you but then again this is my first experience play through with the game. It's good to see a old fashioned feeling game which allows newer people who are new to city builders get accustomed to some of the things they may see more of if they play more games in a similar category. Definitely going to see how the game progresses going forward good job! (will change review the more I play in the future)2 found this helpful
Folklands is a city-building and settlement management game developed by Bromantic Games and published by Light Up Games. Built as a tribute to the classic strategy titles that defined the genre decades ago, the game embraces a slower and more methodical style of progression, focusing on the satisfaction of constructing a thriving community from humble beginnings. Rather than relying on constant conflict or high-stakes survival mechanics, it centers its gameplay around resource management, population growth, and economic development, creating an experience that feels welcoming and relaxing without sacrificing strategic depth. The core gameplay revolves around establishing a settlement and carefully expanding it into a prosperous village. Players gather natural resources, construct production buildings, and create efficient supply chains that keep the economy functioning smoothly. Every structure serves a purpose, and the challenge comes from balancing resource availability with the needs of a growing population. The progression feels natural because each new building unlocks opportunities for further expansion, encouraging players to think several steps ahead while maintaining a s…
