Galactic Center VR

Galactic Center VR is an unusual virtual reality experience that places education and scientific visualization ahead of conventional game design. Developed and published by Instituto de Astrofísica, PUC de Chile, it invites players to explore a representation of the central region of the Milky Way, where the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* resides. Rather than building its appeal around combat, objectives, scoring, or character progression, the experience uses VR as a tool for understanding astronomical phenomena that are otherwise almost impossible to appreciate at a human scale. The scientific foundation is easily its most distinctive quality. The virtual environment draws from astrophysical research and a supercomputer simulation of the region surrounding the galactic center. Players can observe stars moving around this extraordinary environment while examining the powerful stellar winds they produce. These winds interact with surrounding material and with one another, creating extremely hot gas capable of producing X-ray emissions.
