About Gunvein

Gunvein is an intense, dynamic bullet hell STG inspired by the arcade masterpieces of CAVE, Taito and Raizing/8ing.

Screen domination is vital - use your lock ons & charged energy blasts to overwhelm enemies before they overwhelm you.

Aggressive play is rewarded with resources that can be used to temporarily power up your shot, or to unleash a devastating screen clearing Bomb. Use this to create destructive feedback loops!

Score isn't merely a number - the points you accrue come back to you as extra lives & currency for the game's shop system.

Features

Characters

Gunvein has 3 main characters, each one with their own unique playstyle.
\

Riko uses the overwhelming speed and power of the Bagon ship to dance around shots and rhythmically destroy enemies. Has a cone lock-on which allows you to fire homing lasers, and a very powerful black hole bomb.
\

Damul's strength lies in its vast coverage, safety & efficiency. Enemies can be hit from anywhere on the screen, giving Miko full control over how much danger she is in. Has a full screen lock-on & a huge laser beam.
\

Piloting a highly experimental ship Gunex, the young prodigy relies on planning ahead & prediction to set up bomb blasts that catch enemies by surprise. Uses charged bombs & a powered up version of Bagon's homing lasers.

I was taken on my first play of this how intense it feels while not being all that challenging - from start to end it puts you in that zen state where you're almost unconciously dodging and weaving through bullets. In part it's thanks to extremely good bullet visibility, relatively light strategy elements, macro emphasis, the lack of any substantial down-time and some very kind hit/hurtboxes. Difficulty is fairly light (again, on Intense) with a couple of isolated difficulty spikes. The lock-on system is well-executed and adds an extra degree of depth to movement & enemy-relative positioning. The feedback in particular is a lot better than something like Crimzon Clover, which I find feels weak even if it isn't. As a relatively inexperienced bullet hell player it feels most like Mushihimesama in terms of the bullet patterns and speed. It takes me back to stage 5 of that game in particular. Again, the emphasis is on macro, with fast & relatively unlayered patterns, but there's a nice little mix of micro in there to keep you on your toes. After engaging more with the scoring system, it's very well-integrated. It encourages you to play aggressively by feeding you more lives and bomb…

You can do analog movement, it's actually ultra ultra sick. I'm like ultra good now wow! It turns out boghog is actually sick nasty wow. Ultra cool shmup, having to hold two buttons down the whole game really hurts my hands but steam input can fix that i guess. Rad game wow!!

It's like if CAVE came back from the dead and made an actual good new DoDonPachi game.

The more I played the expert mode the more I thought "Hey, this Bog guy's a real jerk!".

As a casual enjoyer of shooters, this hits the spot. Scoring mechanic is very satisfying and the ships have unique play styles. Music is banging, which is always required. Haven't tried to roguelike mechanic but the arcade mode alone is worth the purchase. Will keep playing this one over time.

As a new shmup player, this was a great entry point into the genre. Fast, frenetic pacing, amazing level design, and a killer soundtrack that will get stuck in your head. If you're a fan of fast paced, arcade action look no further.
