About Halved

Halved is a roguelike action RPG game with only a handful of levels and gamemodes but innumerable possibilities for each run. Play as one of 5 characters and traverse the dangerous parts of the world with the help of the mysterious Father of all Machines against his rebel/tyrant son, S.A.N.E.D..Collect powerful items and stack them to up, keeping a select few in between levels and converting the rest into health and raw power. Discover a unique ending with a certain character right after obliterating the final boss with possibly godlike power. Unlock the ultimate gamemode, Bossdome, and progress through new but familiar zones to a brutal final encounter.

Let me start by saying this: I’ve never played any Risk of Rain games, or anything like them, so this review comes from someone who’s not super familiar with the genre, but I hope this helps anyways. Halved is a 2D shooter game with five levels, three difficulties, and five playable characters. The game mainly revolves around shooting randomly spawned enemies until you reach the trigger for the boss, along with using currency from killing enemies or bosses to get status boosts. There’s also a few extra, less important mechanics that I will cover later. There are also various in-game achievements that range from insignificant to things that will allow you to unlock a new playable character. The five levels’ layout is partially random, but there are some structures or patterns that are set to spawn in a certain way every time, such as lifts, parkour, and other examples. The bosses are, in my opinion, enjoyable! I’m not saying they’re flawless, like for example, the second to last boss feels like you’re chasing them down, whilst turning every once in a while to kill a few enemies damaging you (I say them because the fourth boss is two different enemies).
Felky Fun Meter

||----------| [0/10] Not fun!
Movement is very rough and clunky; not because the controls or reactivity is bad; one of the stages makes you go through some pretty precise platforming to reach the teleporter and it's completely fine. The issue is that when you shoot you lose all inertia and your character just stops in the air to fall down on the ground. And since the entire game is about kiting enemies it makes for a very frustrating experience. Speaking of shooting whether you hold the button or manually spam click it feels like you are never strong enough to actually get rid of most enemies on screen no matter what items you find (especially in the desert level). I never got comfortable swapping weapons because it felt unresponsive; never got comfortable reloading any guns because there is no progress-bar or sound or anything indicating a reload you just press the button and wait a few moments sometimes it reloads, sometimes not so I just ended up spamming reload and staring bottom-left of my screen hoping for the best. About the items; it took me a few minutes to even notice/understand what are chests in this game since they come in di…
