Highrisers - An Urban Survival RPG.
A pixel-art exploration and survival retro game. Procedurally generated skyscrapers await with seemingless unlimited possibilites to salvage, loot and craft gear.
Humanity has been struck by a mysterious prion disease, which left those infected trapped in an eternal dream. Unable to wake up, they transformed and changed into the mysterious dreamers: sleepwalking, zombielike creatures that shun the light.
They now dwell in the dimly lit urban canyons of the cities and the lower levels of highrise buildings, hiding away from the sun; only to come out at night, trying to get those who still resist.
Four survivors are stuck on a skyscraper in a desolated metropolis, and only through tenaciousness, tinkering and teamwork will they prevail.

Without the comfort of a functioning society, cities start becoming a harsh and hostile environment very quickly. In order to survive and find a way out, the team must search every nook and cranny of the building, and scavenge everything they can get their hands on.
They have to explore the buildings, scavenge for spare parts, tools and food; and prepare for the nightly onslaught of the dreamers.

From simple clubs over crossbows to improvised firearms and explosives: with the right materials, tools and a good amount of ingeniousness, the survivors can craft an arsenal to be reckoned with. And it's not just weapons: barricades, workbenches, tools, machinery, medicine, food and much more is available.

Before crafting comes research. Many of the more advanced inventions require certain skills. And while there is quite a lot of useful knowledge to acquire, the survivors don't have the time to learn everything. With the right combination, they might make it through another night.

Luckily, the survivors can pool their resources, their skills and their knowledge. If they work together and combine their abilities, they increase their chances of survival tremendously. An old, crashed helicopter on the rooftop is their only chance. Although it will never reach full flight capabilities again, they can use it to jump from rooftop to rooftop, thus slowly making their way out of the city.

- Individual skill trees, which will unlock new recipes, perks, options and powerful interactions between the four characters
- A sheer endless amount of crafting recipes, spare parts, weapons and barricades - it's up to you how to tackle each new building
- Countless procedurally generated levels per skyscraper create infinite high-rise buildings of various types and with different challenges
- Repair the helicopter: modify and improve the HC-27 to escape, transport more goods and fly longer distances
- Confront the dreamers: The mutated humans that dwell in the darkness will try to get you. You must fight them, lure them, immobilize them, hide from them, deter them and stall them until sunrise redeems you - for another day
- Carefully plan ahead in order to survive the night. Special floors that can be found in the buildings allow for extra valuable loot or special interactions
What Steam players say

Highrisers has an interesting survival concept with appealing pixel art and engaging systems like crafting, exploration, and character progression, but the game is undermined by severe time pressure and clunky execution. Players criticize the lack of a pause feature in a game requiring strategic resource management, overly complicated multi-step crafting without automation or queuing systems, and awkward controls that make the experience more frustrating than fun. Some players also report technical issues requiring admin mode to run the game at all.
I thought I might like this despite the reviews, but the execution is just that little bit too clunky. At first it seems straight forward, and like pausing will be enough to sort your way through each plan. I think this wouldn't be terrible if you had time to plan things out, but you're already being rushed to get haphazard weapon crafting done during the first day. It doesn't seem like it'll be too hard to get this done, but the lack of a queue system or automation system means that each individual step of that process becomes a mental weight to lift instead of a few pieces of a puzzle you sort through. It's tough to put into words just how many steps go into something like making a spear. It's something I've done in a dozen other games, but I think here there's such a period of stress between each step that it becomes unfun. You're juggling 4 workers who you desperately need to make the best of your limited time with before the zeds come, but it's difficult when various tasks take different periods of time and making something can go all out of wack when you're trying to keep in mind the 4-6 things you'll be trying to disassemble by travelling to different locations, which'…15 found this helpful
Highrisers is a game about survival where you need to get a group of four people off the high rise to safety away from the dreamers. You control Jes, Ike, Ann, and Mo for their survival on the high rise from the dreamers that lurk on the lower levels. You must scavenge the high rise for resources to repair your helicopter to escape to safety as well as find food along the way to survive in the meantime. You can create weapons and materials to help you in your time on the high rise. The dreamers will attack and hurt you as well as not eating, so you must make sure to make smart decisions. The day will go from day to night and when it reaches night, the dreamers will head further up the high rise, but if you survive the night, you get to level up a character. Scavenging takes some time as well as it'll take up slots in your inventory, so you'll need to make sure to unload your stuff every once in a while. You can disassemble things in the high rise, which can vary in time, which will yield more parts for you to use. There are certain things that can only be interacted with if you have the appropriate items to use. There are some other things you can do like investigate items (I don…2 found this helpful
I was hyped for this game initially. Beautiful pixel art and fascinating concept had me hooked. However I cannot recommend. Lack of push pause in a game that requires resource management and strategic thinking breaks this game for me. Additionally, game appears to be in a "final state", with a lack of updates, so I don't expect this feature to be added.1 found this helpful
There are good ideas in this game, but it's held back by the severe time pressure that's imposed on a game that is far too fiddly. You need to know which of your four characters has which items and what skills/recipes at all times, as well as where all of the resources you've gathered are. You cannot just take the time to explore because the zombies are coming, and they're growing stronger every minute. And god forbid you send the wrong person to the right workbench; they don't have the right items or know the right recipe and now they're out of position as you also have to send the right person off your defensive line... I want to like this game. The crafting is interesting, the exploration is interesting, and the levelling is interesting. But it just isn't fun to play.
"Asset loading failed: [file_open.data/flixel.pkg]" To solve the problem (to start the game at all) you have to start the game in Admin-mode. Till now I haven't played the game, since I am already happy enough to bring it to start for now. But I refuse to recommend games where you have to lower security options and where the devs can't provide a proper solution even after years of development. ...even though I totally understand that they don't worry much, since the game is sponsored by the german gouvernment. Gouvernment jobs are always a free ticket to do whatever and however you want to do it. Nobody "up there" does even understand what you are doing. ;) But there is still a chance to change my review to positive, when I have tested the game itself and its cool enough...
The game is a solid idea and build as well, problem i face is the controls are wonky at times. But other then that is a good game just need a little more work is all and i hope to see more from this dev as they have a good idea just not the skill to make the best yet
