In Extremis is a highly unconventional shoot ’em up that takes the familiar formula of dodging projectiles and destroying waves of enemies and pushes it into much stranger territory. Developed and published by LNDFRR, it has the mechanical foundations of an old-school arcade shooter, but its personality comes from surreal environments, experimental themes, dramatic shifts in presentation, and an eclectic soundtrack. Rather than attempting to imitate one particular classic, it treats the genre as a foundation for a bizarre audiovisual journey that becomes increasingly unpredictable as it progresses. At its core, the action is immediately understandable. You control a small craft, maneuver around enemy fire, eliminate incoming threats, and survive long enough to reach the next encounter. Movement and positioning are important because the screen can become crowded quickly, demanding concentration without turning every moment into an impenetrable wall of bullets. The game provides twelve weapons, giving players opportunities to experiment with different offensive approaches. In Extremis is a strange little shoot em up that feels like it is trying to do more than just throw enemies and bullets at me. It is a fast 2D space shooter with a very strong psychedelic style, but each stage also has its own idea and atmosphere. I am moving through eleven stages that cover themes like war, fear, nostalgia, melancholy and sex, and the game keeps changing how those stages look and play. I like that because I never feel completely sure what the next section is going to do with the basic shoot em up formula. The biggest strength for me is the variety between the stages. Each one has its own visual style and different mechanics, so the game does not simply repeat the same type of level with a different background. There are also twelve weapons to experiment with, and they have their own quirks rather than all feeling like slightly different versions of the same gun. Some sections are much more focused on dodging and positioning, while others give me different things to think about. That keeps the short campaign moving at a good pace. Игровой процесс сложный, но увлекательный, требующий тактического мышления и умения адаптироваться к постоянно меняющимся условиям. Сюжет, хоть и не отличается особой новизной, подаётся интригующе, мотивируя исследовать мир и узнавать его историю. Рекомендую любителям хардкорных выживалок, готовым к трудностям и не прощающим ошибок. Единственный минус - некоторая однообразность локаций ближе к концу игры, но это с лихвой компенсируется общей атмосферой и геймплейными механиками.
