July the Lost Child

Please note that this is my personal opinion and I received this copy for free. July and the Lost Child is a 2D pixel based point and click horror adventure, where you play as a child waking up recurringly to discover the dark, creepy, atmospheric world you are plundered into. Playing this I found it to be a little tedious as it can feel very repetitive as it is primarily short in length and thus can feel a little bit frustrating to go through the same path to find something that may still meet your demise. Despite this, it contains elements that are surprisingly dark and somewhat eerie, leaving you with a feeling of isolation and fear. For the price, I would definitely recommend July and the Lost Child, as I feel it is a hidden gem in my experience of horror games. Totally unexpected and I would rate it a 7.5/10.

[b] July the Lost Child [/b] is a psychological horror game that uses a point&click interface. It has a very interesting format where instead of following a linear path, you are replaying the same 10-15 minutes in order to find a different conclusion to the story (a bit similar to Red Haze and Dear Red). The game basically has many abrupt endings, so I guess we are trying to navigate around the mistakes that often get you killed. You play as a little girl that keeps waking up in her room whenever you find a wrong ending, that is where the psychological aspect comes in. If you take too long to explore, your mom shows up and that is when things can go bad. Let me tell you, that mom will do subzero fatalities on you if you do not behave -- I **** you not she can take off your head from your spine. This game just oozes atmosphere that is created by disturbing visuals, spooky sound effects, and mysterious narrative. I find that all aspects of this game complement each other, creating a very immersive experience. Despite having a silly voxel design (makes me think of The Padre), it is actually a little scary. A little gem of creepy storytelling compressed in a small and fixed time and space. The atmosphere is eerie, surreal and disturbing. You know that there is something wrong in the air, but you cannot understand why. The game plays as a standard point and click adventure set entirely in a house. The interesting thing is that the game is build upon multiple plays and upon learning from the past experience. Some actions should be done quickly and in a very short window to change the ending, but you could know this only by playing several times. The trial and error is however very well integrated, and the discovery of new events and areas keep the interest high. The graphic also works quiet good to deliver a message and to build a bigger sense of mystery and dread. I don't know how long it is necessary to see all the endings, or if there is a "true ending", but what I can say is that the game delivers a strong and unique atmosphere supported by a surreal and creepy narrative.

July the Lost Child is a cryptic voxel based experience disguised as a point and click adventure game. Its strongest points are an unnverving atmosphere and refined camera angles during cutscenes. After some "rewinds" it becomes clear that the gameplay is based on trial and error. Performing some actions and using the few items at disposal as fast as possible is the key. Despite many misspellings and the unskippable cutscenes (they're cool but after ten times...), I really enjoyed the experience. But I'm aware it's not for everyone.

Cool game, unusual concept. You play through a series of events like a recurring nightmare trying to fugure out how to avoid 'waking up' and starting over. Great soundtrack and moody lighting. Loved it! Some dialogue would be good to skip through once you have played a few times. Looking forward to episode 2...
