Kollywood: The Game is an unusual interactive comedy that takes the exaggerated action and dramatic flair associated with Tamil cinema and transforms them into a very short video game experience. Developed and published by KollywoodGameStudios, the game is less concerned with providing complicated mechanics than with putting the player directly inside an intentionally ridiculous cinematic adventure. Its mixture of stop-motion footage, full-motion-video presentation, quick-time events, and parody makes it feel closer to an interactive comedy film than a traditional action game, but that unconventional identity is precisely what gives it charm. The story follows Baasha, who spends his day watching a Tamil movie before falling asleep on his couch. Kollywood: The Game is such a strange little experience that I could not help but enjoy it. I play as Baasha, a man who falls asleep while watching a Tamil movie and suddenly finds himself inside the world of the film. From there, I have to make my way through the movie and try to get back home. I loved how quickly the game commits to the over the top style of Tamil cinema. The gameplay is built almost entirely around quick time events. During fight scenes, I have to hold or rapidly press the correct buttons to keep the action going. It is extremely simple, but the comedy comes from what is happening around those inputs. The stop motion presentation makes even basic fights feel like part of a ridiculous action movie. The fail scenes are one of my favorite touches. When I mess up a sequence, the game does not simply give me a generic game over screen. Instead, I get to see another funny result before being returned to the previous checkpoint. I liked this because failing becomes part of the entertainment rather than something I only want to avoid. The presentation is easily the strongest part. The whole game feels like a strange combination of a live action comedy, stop motion mo…
