I've been here since launch and the game has mostly died. The engine itself is pretty rough and many of the game modes are completely vibe coded and barely work. But there are some great gems that I come back to occasionally. There are frequent updates but nothing substantial and the fact each update wipes your settings annoys me. Launch was a disaster. They decided to release with unoriginal and unfinished game modes so many players were forced to play all the slop game modes that were recommended to them. For developers, the pre-bundled assets were abysmal and major engine changes prior to launch kneecapped a lot of game modes. This is a game engine marketed as a game chocked full of micro transactions. It should be free, and in early access. I don't recommend buying the game in its current state. Wait for a sale or for it to go free.1 found this helpful
It definitely has potential, but there just isn't enough content or players for me to recommend you spend $25 on it right now. Especially considering the fact the two most populated games right now are a gambling and lawn mowing simulator.
Here to counter the bad reviews... Linux support is horrible right now but hopefully that improves Garry has said himself that S&Box is NOT Garry's Mod 2 despite what these other reviews say (its a spiritual successor). S&Box is "more complicated" because Facepunch is structuring it as sort of a game engine AND a hosted game platform with community features (optionally letting your game be standalone on steam, or relying on the discoverability and other features of S&Box as a platform). However, similarly to Garry's Mod, S&Box relies completely on YOU AND OTHER PEOPLE to create content for it and for other people to use and play with! Its not listed as "early access" but it may as well be because there's not a lot of high quality games made yet (it'll get there if you trust the process). So stop review bombing this fantastic thing and see it for what it is: the "next" garrys mod / roblox / game engine / super modded game you can think of.
