Last Dawn

By now minimal graphics are used almost everywhere, but all in all here they are put to good use. The game is simple and intuitive. The ending doesn't exist and the game suddenly closed.5/10. It can be done much better.

"Last Dawn" is a short pointless asset flip, a simple walking sim where you walk through an asset flipped low poly forest and avoid some stuff, find 5 generators and yeah, that's it. Looks bad, plays worse, next to no content. Waste of time. The game graphics look better than you might expect, but that's just because it looks like some or all of them are "borrowed" from asset stores or wherever. Gamers can tell... and it comes across as insincere. There's also the old adage that those who lack the budget and talent to make their own game assets usually lack the budget and talent to do the rest of the job of game development properly, too. This is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? …

This is one of the shortest games I've ever played. At only 15 to 20 minutes long, this should be labelled as a Demo, not a complete game. And it's not even really a game. It's actually just a Walking Sim. It has minimalist, low-poly graphics. And best of all, it's free. The controls are about as simple as they can be. Movement is the standard 'W/A/S/D' keys ([i]+ 'Left Shift' to run[/i]), and deactivating a terminal is 'Left Mouse Button'. Move the mouse to look around. Some soft music plays in the background. You start out at the location of your crashed ship. It's currently a cold winter night, and it's snowing. You're in a small valley, surrounded by mountains which you can't climb, so it's impossible to get lost. You can see a city on the top of the mountains, but you can only move around this small valley area. You have to find 5 terminals/generators, and they are very easy to find because they each have a red light at the top of an antenna tower. Thus, just scan around and look for a circle of red light coming through the trees or coming over a hill. When you see one, head towards it. When you get to one of the terminals, click on it to deactivate it. After…

Simple plot and nice and short for something to kill time; however the ending is abrupt and leaves you unsatisfied as well as closing the game immediately after without any warning which is jarring. It gives the impression of something that could of been greater, but was suspended or rushed to simply release. It's not anything special by any means however considering it's free it's not the worst; in saying that there are more promising free games to spend your time on instead.

Last Dawn is a walking simulator; one of the other reviewers mentioned that it felt like an abandoned game that was turned into what it is and released. If that's true then it's still better than releasing nothing, but I get the sense that Last Dawn is exactly what it was always intended to be. There isn't any context for the game if you don't read the Steam page, which caused me to happily jog toward one of the guards on my first playthrough attempt. Once I read what was going on, I thought, "Surely the guards know what I'm doing and where I'll be heading? There's only one possibility here." So I wasn't disappointed by what happened at all. Moral of the story: do not flee the dystopian city you live in.
