About Medusa VR

A scene from an original virtual reality story by Tomis Fras.

Medusa is a story about two Croatian actors, adapting to a rapidly changing industry. From acting in plays at the Croatian National Theatre to acting in motion capture suits for a major Hollywood studio. They explore themes of artistic integrity, cultural identity and learning to cope with uncertainty.

In this 10 minute Room-scale VR experience, you’ll join them for a conversation over coffee at the canals of ‘A-Studios’.

This piece is a solo-devoloped passion project - fully voiced and mocaped in Croatian with English subtitles.

Context: this is a proof of concept for a full three Act Medusa VR Film - this scene is from Act 2 Scene 5 of Medusa. Should you be interested in ever seeing the full VR film come to life, feel free to comment in the reviews.

Viewed with the Quest 2 Very beautiful world. This is just a short Story in VR and there is no interactions but you can pick up some objects. Subtitles in English and the Figures are very interesting. Love the way this was made but wish it had lasted longer. If you like fun VR stories, This is good to add to your VR library to share with friends. I did enjoy it. Thank you

"Medusa, the Croatian word for jellyfish. Medusa VR is 10 minute solo-developed VR film. Join Russel and Zlatan - two Croatian actors in California for a coffee by the canal as they discuss grief, change and loss. When on strange shores, would you swim with Medusas?" Ok This describes the program pretty well. It worked on my Index and HTC Vive system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok, was understandable with subtitles. You start on a float with a table and cups that you can pick up, could teleport about the float. Not sure if there is a timer that starts your boat trip on the canal to the two actors. Takes about 10 minutes total. Not really a Film that was interesting to see, but the ride was ok. Maybe try this free VR experience, if you understand Croatian language.

Medusa VR is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this "art experience". Instead of being a game, Medusa VR is a software application that presents a poorly made art exhibition. We get this non-game shovelware on Steam whenever your usual Starbucks barista/McDonalds frycook art school dropout finally gets a restraining order from the local art galleries so turns to Steam Direct to try get their art published somewhere so they can finally dream of moving out of their parents basement. It's true that games can be art... art is where the pinnacles of craftsmanship and quality meet vision and narrative to create an experience far greater than the sum of the parts. This isn't a game at all, and the craftsmanship and narrative are terrible. This isn't making art better, it's just making gaming worse. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, incr…
