About Meridian 59

Play the world's first 3D massively-multiplayer online game! You will need to create a free account on our Web site in order to log in.

Meridian was released in 1996, when few people had heard of the Internet. It became well-known for its exciting player-vs-player (PvP) combat system, often setting alliances of guilds against each other. It has been running almost continuously ever since. In 2010 it returned to its original creators, and now it's open source and completely free. Come and see the game that started it all!

After creating your account and logging in, you will customize your character and select your initial skills and spells. You start in the town of Raza. Right-click on signs to learn the controls and basic combat. After passing through a glowing portal, you will be transported to the main world, where you are free to explore. Don't be afraid to ask other players for help!

Meridian is completely free--there are no purchases, in-game or otherwise, and no advertising. If you would like to donate to keep the servers running, you may do so on our Web site.

Revisiting it today is less about comparing it to contemporary titles and more about experiencing a design philosophy that prioritizes player freedom, risk, and community-driven storytelling over convenience. From the moment you enter its world, Meridian 59 feels markedly different from modern MMOs. There is little in the way of structured onboarding, and the game offers minimal direction. Instead, players are dropped into a persistent environment and left to determine their own path. Character development follows a flexible system without rigid class definitions, allowing for a wide range of builds shaped by individual choices. This freedom is one of the game’s defining strengths, giving players a strong sense of ownership over their characters, but it also comes with a stee…

Only MMORPG where you can cast Jig as a bard and make everyone nearby actually drop their weapons and start dancing! (changes the entire room OST for all players also) Good community that actually helps dizzy newbies Josh Strife Hayes approved btw!

It's free, give it a try if you want to see a piece of mmo history. Pretty difficult to figure out though, you'll need a lot of patience if you want to really get into it. Not a lot of people are still playing unfortunately.
