✦ AI summary
Players praise this game for its excellent design that transcends typical NES limitations, feeling polished and modern while maintaining authentic retro aesthetics, along with its cute and engaging charm. However, a significant complaint involves local co-op functionality being broken, with additional controllers failing to work properly, which is a critical issue for players seeking multiplayer experiences.
It's great, simple fun. Nothing extravagant, but it doesn't feel clunky & you can climb the skill ceiling to get faster. Death isn't too punishing, & the encounters are well designed. I got this game on sale for a 1$, more than worth the purchase!1 found this helpful
Bought for local co-op and the controllers for additional players don't work. Hard pass on games like this that can't get basic functionality right.1 found this helpful
Not only is it obviously fully NES-capable, but even if it wasn't, this'd still be worth your time. The platforming is around the quality of SMB3 in my opinion (which is the best the NES gets) and they MANAGED TO MAKE AN ICE LEVEL ACTUALLY FUN. I really hope to see Morphcat become something bigger in the future, I love these guys' work.
For today's standards, it's okay. For NES standards, it's a technical marvel. Not really _too_ fun when playing alone, but I'm sure playing with friends would be fun
Micro Mages . The game is beautiful and takes full advantage of the NES style limitations. The character designs are superb. The animations are great. The characters control amazing, jumping and shooting are a joy. Enemy patterns are varied, with unique bosses every three levels. If this game had come out back in the NES era, it would have been a major hit. The hero periodically gains perks, like a feather that allows him to hover, like in Mario 3, and a fairy that acts as a shield that disappears after taking damage. It's a blast to play. I highly recommend it! . Controls D-pad - move A - jump B - shoot Start - menu Select - drop fairy
Micro Mages is an impressive example of how classic game design can remain fresh and entertaining when paired with thoughtful modern sensibilities. Developed by Morphcat Games and published by Morphcat Games UG, this retro-inspired platformer is much more than a nostalgic tribute. It is an authentic NES game built within the hardware limitations of the original console while also being available on Steam for modern audiences. Rather than relying solely on pixel art and chiptune music to evoke memories of the past, it embraces the philosophy of old-school game design by emphasizing responsive controls, rewarding challenge, and carefully crafted levels. The result is a platformer that feels timeless instead of outdated. The adventure follows a group of tiny spellcasters who climb through the dangerous Demon Fortress in pursuit of treasure while battling monsters, avoiding traps, and defeating powerful bosses. Although the premise is straightforward, it provides the perfect foundation for an experience built around fast-paced action and precision platforming. Each stage encourages players to move upward through increasingly hazardous environments, introducing new enemy behaviors and …
