About Never Second in Rome

Never Second in Rome is a turn-based historical game with RPG and management elements. You take the role of a Roman centurion in the army of Julius Caesar.
In a Republic dominating the Mediterranean World and yet shaken by internal strife, still traumatized by the horrors of the civil war that marked the previous generation, the arrival of a new governor in your province will initiate a succession of events that will ultimately define the future of Rome and its empire.
Starting right before the beginning of the Gallic War, you will assume command of a century in a newly raised legion.

Key features

  • In addition to the main character, you will control the small army unit in your charge, your century.
  • Train yourself and your century, appoint your staff and discover the most remarkable individuals at your service.
  • Fight and lead your legionaries in real historical battles relying on a complex system of intertwined stats.
  • Turn-based individual combat involving not only your main character, but also the soldiers under your command.
  • Text-based events and narrative sections with many Attribute and Skill checks.
  • Great care and attention to historical detail and accuracy.

Free demo available

You can download and play the free demo directly on Steam. It allows you to explore the first three chapters of the game at your own pace. I recommend trying it before you buy, it's the best way to find out whether this game is up your alley.

If you like strategic games with interesting combat mechanics and troop management, this is the game for you! It's mostly text based and the number crunching can feel a little intimidating, but I pretty quickly got a feel for it and didn't need to get bogged down in the math. However, if you like to get bogged down in the math, it's all there for you to sink your teeth into! I finished my first play through in ~30 hours and after the recent update I'm starting my second playthrough and am definitely looking forward to it!

Wow, never post reviews but the love and care gone into this game is immense. Fantastically written and the mechanics, whilst difficult to understand at first, really do mesh together well. Bloody difficult though.

It's a quaint little game where your stats and decisions matter. You take on the role of a Centurion, leader of 40-80 men within a cohort depending on how well you lead, and follow the trials and tribulations of Caesar as he makes his way from Gaul to the Ides of March. You must take on the challenges of training and commanding your men whilst also growing yourself, and be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. Even as a Centurion, there is oppertunity to advance in rank, and the better you do the more you are rewarded. This adds a bit of replayability. There is no voice acting, and a lot of reading, but it's well worth it especially for the price--if you don't mind that kind of thing.

Take a deep breath and dive There's a difficulty curve, and at some moments it feels like you're fighting a dice roll and a calculator. But once you get into the groove (for me the 3rd try) it becomes enveloping. The narrative provides an interesting background of the conditions that underlaid the expansion of the Roman Republic. And here you are, a soldier, loyal to "Rome", but really are a tool to the whims of your elite superiors. Great stuff.
