About NOSTOI

NOSTOI is a narrative 3D puzzle and platformer game with a gameplay mechanics based on the physics and time manipulation. The game is about a boy who tries to escape his psychological trauma.

It is a calm, but challenging single player title which requires focusing and careful analysis of the environment in order to succeed. The story has quite a few analogies to cognitive and psychological phenomena, such as “false memory”.

If you miss the old indie classics that charmed the player with a unique art style, gameplay and plot, than NOSTOI is the title you should be interested in.

KEY FEATURES

• Narrative, platformer-puzzle game
• Cel-shading and chibi art style
• Puzzles based on the physics and time manipulation
• Plot with references to the psychology and pop culture
• Calm, but challenging gameplay

GAMEPLAY

Every level in the game has a puzzle the player has to solve in order to proceed. The challenges are of various types – reconstruct destroyed stairs, sneak unnoticed, return blocks to their original place. And almost every land has one thing in common – Time Obelisks. Time Obelisks allow to revert some objects in time and return them to their default position. So, you have to get the access to Time Obelisks or activate them in a particular way. When all the obelisks in the level are activated and the puzzle is solved, the gate to another land is accessible.

However, figuring out how to get to the Time Obelisks is not always a piece of cake. Every land has custom physics areas, so the player has to carefully look around the level and figure out which combination will succeed. To make your task a little bit easier, there are allies in every land which will tell you some story and hints.

STORY

An anonymous boy is stuck in a limbo - which was caused by his psychological problems – and tries to escape it. The limbo is full of curious lands with unusual physical phenomena, which have to be understood and defeated.

However, the boy is not completely alone. In every land, his subconsciousness creates an ally, a tiny monster called Regrepsa. Regrepsa can tell him something about the current land, the overall situation and give a clue how to escape it – and everything will be told in a quite mysterious way. After all, it is up to our protagonist if he can solve the puzzle or not.

✦ AI summary

Players praise NOSTOI's distinctive minimalist art style, atmospheric music, and creative puzzle-platformer gameplay with fresh ideas across its levels. However, common complaints center on the frustrating camera system that's positioned too close to the character limiting visibility, an inadequate tutorial that leaves mechanics unexplained, and a controversial HP heart system that feels poorly paced and discourages progression, alongside occasional technical issues like controller support problems.

The camera angle - Too close from the character, with nearly no possible overview - make this game nearly implayable :( Plus the "tutorial" has very little to no explanations :(

A quaint little game. It has an interesting, slightly dreamlike atmosphere built by a soothing music, cute sound effects and a nice, minimalistic artstyle. Each of the 5 levels has a handful of fresh ideas resulting in more or less unique gameplay. It's a mix of a platforming and puzzle game, succeeding in providing a challenge for your brain and fingers. On the flip side, the game's HP system doesn't fit well with its pacing, it can become quite confusing at times and it seems that the steps between introducing new, often interesting, ideas, challenging the player with them and moving on to the next one are taken a bit too quickly. All in all, if you aren't easily discouraged and want to try something that looks and feels fresh, NOSTOI might be what you are looking for.

So many things to love! Art style is uncanny and interesting. Music is really nice and suits the game. The 3x Heart System is terrible and made me not want to continue playing. Please remove the hearts and leave the obelisk check point system. https://youtu.be/mlvYg1275D0

NOSTOI is a low poly/minimalist 3D platformer built with the Unreal Engine and featuring custom assets and minimalistic/low poly "art". Gameplay consists of moving around various moving platforms (you can't jump), hitting buttons to "rewind" things (basically just move things around) and bouncing off catapult/trampoline things. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the mid 2000s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. NOSTOI didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very…

I wished they had a neutral recommendation. The game is a unique puzzle platformer, which is fun. I couldn't get the controller to work, nor could I get to a main menu (usually the 'ESC' key). Maybe it is just me when it came to this issue. The keyboard movement works fine. Not sure I'd get this at the current price. If it goes on sale and if I'm the only one with the controller and ESC key issue, it's worth a spin to play. Still goint to give it a thumbs up, but with some reservation to it.
