About One Last Crane

"One Last Crane" is a visual novel centered on Yuuki Murakami, a boy who has a brain tumor. After a long year of treatment without any positive results, Yuuki asks for his final wish: to return to his hometown and fulfill his promise to meet again with his childhood friend, Saki Nishimura. However, as always, things are hard for him.

Saki no longer lives where she used to, and no one knows her whereabouts. The last hint Yuuki got was from the high school Saki had said she wanted to attend—Shimizu High School. Together with his adopted little sister, Mary, and his new tomboyish neighbor, Chihiro, Yuuki keeps searching for the girl, only to meet Asuka Fujimoto, the most popular girl at school, who happens to look like Saki.

Not once has Yuuki doubted that Asuka really is Saki, but Asuka gives him the cold shoulder without admitting that she’s Saki. Could she really be a different person? Faced with the prospect that his life could end soon, Yuuki is determined to find Saki, even within another person.

I am not going to say this is a bad Visual Novel, it just wasn't my 'cup of tea'. I was dissapointed but interested in the short route I seemingly completed. I know there are possibly more routes, but the way my route abruptly ended, as well as how I didn't get any credits to indicate i reached an ending and was just randomly greeted with the Title screen again. I feel like the story was progressing very interestingly, but to reach the point I was at, where it seemed the story was just about to really start, it just... ended. I'm sure others will enjoy this more than I did, especially if they dont get the ending I did first but I was left very unsatisfied with the way my route seemingly randomly ended, enough for me to not want to try others sadly.

I give this the Marceline seal of approval. Though the actual localization can be spotty at times, with some routes having this problem more than others, the story still comes across as understandable and mostly clear. The actual plot is pretty standard VN affairs, but the characters have their moments and I enjoyed the time I spent with the game. Full disclosure, however that I am a kickstarter backer for this project.

Its enjoyable VN with heartfelt story that holds you over to end. It has some problems but overall, it gets it message across to player. Different routes complement each other’s stories giving fuller picture world around you. If you are looking for this kind of VN to play I would recommended it to you.
