Pippa and Your Phantasmal Problem is a short supernatural comedy visual novel that turns a strange domestic disturbance into a charming encounter with witchcraft, mystery, and an eccentric new companion. Developed and published by Konayachi, it begins with an increasingly troublesome situation inside Ms Ester’s otherwise well-kept home. Dirt keeps appearing on the carpet, belongings mysteriously disappear, and unexplained messes continue to occur whenever she is away. Attempts to solve the problem through more conventional means have produced no answers, leaving the protagonist in serious danger of being thrown out unless the mystery is resolved. The situation eventually leads to Pippa, a self-proclaimed witch whose unusual personality makes her seem like either the perfect supernatural investigator or another problem waiting to happen. The writing works best when it combines the paranormal mystery with light comedy. Pippa and Your Phantasmal Problem is such a cute little visual novel that I found myself smiling at how seriously it treats such a silly supernatural situation. I play as someone looking after Ms Ester's house while she is away, only to discover that the place has been mysteriously ruined by something nobody can identify. Things become even more ridiculous when I end up relying on Pippa, a rather suspicious self proclaimed witch, to solve the problem. The main gameplay is built around choices and conversations, so most of my time is spent getting to know Pippa and deciding how I want to respond to different situations. I liked that the choices are not just there for decoration. They can influence how the story develops and which ending I reach, giving me a reason to think about what I am doing instead of simply clicking through the dialogue. One of my favorite little mechanics is choosing what to feed Pippa. Different foods affect her magical energy, which can then influence what happens in the story.
