Kinda sucks to say, but I'm not a huge fan of PopSlinger, in terms of gameplay mechanics at least. I do love the visuals, music, dialogue, everything related to the presentation. All of that is top-notch to me, which makes the fact I couldn't get into it more disappointing. I'm the kind of person who usually loves arcade-y action games, so I figured this would be up my alley. But to be honest, it was the whole color-matching mechanic that broke the experience for me. So many of the issues that made me frustrated resulted from this one idea. Maintaining a combo is not very intuitive for me, since enemies come in such different groups of colors (plus your combo automatically breaks if you take damage). Sure, you're probably supposed to replay the stage and create an optimal high score route, but my instinct is to TRY and maintain my combo as long as possible. What makes it feel even worse when I drop a combo is that...the game doesn't have much strategy BEYOND color linking. You need a big enough chain for the power-ups, so if you're in a pinch, these are very unlikely to help you. In general, taking hits punishes you way harder than most other games I've played, and it's a pretty st…17 found this helpful
I'm happy to have purchased this game just for support for the music and artstyle, which I absolutely loved, but the gameplay is lacking in my opinion, I feel like the screen zoom is too close and often you can't see enemies until they're on top of you, and a lot of untelegraphed and unreactable attacks even in the first bossfight. I wanted to like it more, but I made it to the second boss until I decided the gameplay was too frustrating for me. Absolute banger soundtrack from Skule Toyama though, which I still listen to regularly.4 found this helpful
A very demanding game that doesn't hold up its end of the bargain. A lack of polish, interesting mechanics, and enemy design make it hard to reach the score requirements from popping color coded enemies in color coded barriers that the game sometimes tricks you into breaking. The weapon types hamper the streaks and the streaks hamper the power up system. Being told I had to get a B Rank minimum on a level where a mechanic was disabled entirely did not help this perception. The iffy audio mixing also means the soundtrack it prides itself on can't be appreciated within its own context. I see the vision, but I can't say the execution justifies it.1 found this helpful
this game seems fun and cute, but until there is a way to actually play it in fullscreen and not just windowed I have to say I don't recommend it. The game's resolution is too low that even on my fairly not great monitor the window is super small and I can't see it well enough to react. I've checked the options and the discussion boards and have found no way to run it at a higher resolution or in fullscreen.1 found this helpful
played through most of the game to get all the guns in hopes itd eventually get good but it just never does.Every area where you fight is either too big or too small, the dodge is almost useless and boss movements sometimes just feel erratic.Games got a decent ost and i thought the concept was cool but its just such a slog to play that i dont think i could ever bring myself to actually get good ratings on all the stages.
A Challenging Shoot 'Em Up
For me, PopSlinger is a challenging shoot 'em up that at first requires a lot of trial and error to get through the levels with the amount of dodging and shooting of enemies, especially in later levels and in boss fights. I recall my first playthrough being very challenging, but subsequent attempts let me understand my mistakes and try to do better next time. For instance, understanding where enemies come from and trying to use that to your advantage will come from playing and progressing through each level. So, I suggest not getting disheartened from repeated attempts. As for the story, you'll following plucky Ria as she teams up with Gin to help save the day against the gooey monsters while she tries to discover herself and poke fun at Gin's serious nature. The duo have a tense partnership, but Ria and Gin have that dynamic of a fun-and-lighthearted girl with her mysterious mentor assisting her. In short, PopSlinger can be a very, very difficult shoot 'em up to play at first as the reliance on dodging and strafing is quite high in this game, but your initial shortcomings will help you succeed in popping all the enemies in sight. And one m…
