Protect Your Fool

"Protect Your Fool" is a laughably bad, weird tech demo... basically a click-shooter where you pick a weapon then kill an enemy while a "fool" walks along and you protect him from threats... hey, that could even work as a game if there was a remotely competent technical delivery backing it up. The technical delivery here was, from what I can tell, done with a chimpanzee and an Apple ][ in the space of half an hour. What do you do in the game? Click on enemies, uninstall quickly. So this looks like an old 1990's Adobe Flash game that you might play in a web browser, and the problem there is obviously Steam wasn't intended to try compete with Chrome and Firefox. If it can be done in a web browser, it's not even close to a cutting edge PC gaming experience. That's a problem. The game is really simple and unambitious in terms of implementation, more of a tech demo or one of those cases where an amateur developer spends $100 to publish something on Steam Direct to see if it's possible. Protect Your Fool is one of those simple arcade games that looks easy until I actually start playing it. The idea is pretty funny because my entire job is to protect a completely helpless fool from everything being thrown at him. Enemies, objects and other hazards keep coming toward his position, and I have to react quickly enough to stop them before they reach him. It is a very straightforward concept, but the speed makes it surprisingly stressful. The main gameplay is all about choosing the correct weapon and clicking the incoming threat before it gets too close. I have four options available, including my hands, a blade, a hammer and a shotgun. Different enemies require different responses, so I cannot just sit there clicking everything as quickly as possible. I have to recognize what is coming toward me and switch weapons at the right moment. That combination of mouse accuracy and keyboard timing is what makes the game work. I especially liked the way the game teaches me to memorize enemy behaviour. Иногда необходима перестановка башен в самый последний момент, чтобы выдержать натиск. Отдельно хочется отметить, что игра не пытается выкачать деньги, предлагая честный и приятный опыт.
