tl;dr: I don't think the game is as good as Psyvariar Delta, which is also on steam, but that's a high bar to clear and the game still has a decent amount to offer. --- The first thing to note is that the Psyvariar games are something of a niche within a niche. They are shmups, but ones with unique mechanics that make them play in unconventional ways. If you're looking for a game about the simple joy of dodging and shooting then you might want to look elsewhere, e.g. Mushihimesama. On the other hand, if you're interested in something innovative that reinforces the precepts of the genre by recontextualising them with new mechanics, then the series might be for you. The original duo of Psyvariar games were developed by Success and released in the year 2000 – the year before Treasure's Ikaruga, which I think is a useful comparison for the kind of games they are. The idea isn't to build scoring or resource management systems on top of a conventional shmup, but to introduce mechanics that fundamentally change how you approach every moment of gameplay. An interesting new instalment to the series. There are many pilots and ships to choose from this time, each with different weapons and traits, while keeping (of course) the main bullet scratching mechanic. Recommended! (8.5/10)6 found this helpful
BULLET COLECT EM UP AND EXPLODE MORE LIKE. ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE WHAT YOU ARE DOING MOST OF THE TIME. ANOTHER IMPOSSIBLE RETRO SHMUP THATST NOT FUN TO PLAY AT ALL. UNINSTALLED & GOOD RIDANCE.1 found this helpful
The game started out a bit rough but it now feels pretty good and fun after the recent updates, and it does fit in with the grazing-focused Psyvariar series, so I recommend it. But I honestly suggest the devs continue patching or updating the game with more/better gameplay content especially more intensely iconic and memorable boss fights like we've seen previously in the Psyvariar series, and maybe some bonus stages like those in R-Type Final 2/3. The updates made so far to the game have already been quite promising.
game itself just didn't feel good to me - felt like it was way too easy to oversteer into bullets and my hitbox felt ginormous. it wasn't fun to go for risky plays or grazes because it felt like i was the size of a small planet and would just get blown up. i know i didn't 'get' the game fully and it's probably a great time underneath it all but i just didn't think it was fun enough to put in that effort. great graphics and sound though, would only touch up a few things here and there. i didn't realize Cotton from Cotton was in here too and she's always a nice inclusion. i wish there was a Mixed option on steam, this is a Mixed game for me
An interesting game with cool grazing and invulnerability mechanics with a cast of characters to fit any playstyle. I think it can be great for the elite pros and those looking for a fun, yet still challenging Shmup experience. As scoring systems in vertical Shmups can be a bit confusing.
