About Ratcheteer DX

The surface has been claimed by an Impact Winter but beneath the ice and earth, mankind hibernates. As a young apprentice mechanic, you wake up in the dark. The Power Plant is offline. The Water Treatment Plant seems to be too. The Cryo Colony is in danger! What begins as a simple trip to fetch your mentor’s wrench sets off a winding journey through the caverns below to a vast Snowcean above to rescue friends, foes, and strangers alike.Along the way, you'll find and master eight unassuming tools, each opening new paths for exploration. Starting with just the Crank Lantern to light your first steps into the dark and the Wrench Sword to swing at what you find lurking in it, you'll be bounding, drilling, gliding, stomping, and dashing your way across the world of the Ratcheteer by the time you reach the end.Originally released for the black-and-white Playdate, this updated version reimagines the game in full color with a CD-quality stereo soundtrack and support for 10 languages.

FEATURES:

  • Explore more than 250 rooms across 6 regions and 6 dungeons
  • Master 8 unassuming tools and maybe even an alien language
  • Challenge 6 unique bosses (can you find the secret boss rush time trial?)
  • Play in full Color, Pea Soup green, Playdate gray, or high contrast black-and-white (with optional scanline, grid, and dot overlays)
  • Listen to Matthew Grimm's 8-bit masterpiece with CD-quality stereo sound
  • Experience an original story in 10 supported languages

Really surprisingly fun Zelda-like game. I'm honestly impressed with how charming it was, considering the premise. I found myself backtracking just to talk to everyone and check in as I progressed. I'm used to games seemingly inspired by Zelda but not really delivering, so I honestly had low expectations, but I quickly fell in love with this one. To be fair, I'm a sucker for anything that looks like GBA Zelda games, but I'm generally pretty picky. I stayed engaged the entire way through and was happy to 100% it. Highly recommend this game to anyone who likes retro games at all, but especially for fans of old-school, top-down Zelda games. A couple of negative notes, though. From a mechanical view, the jumping is rough. It doesn't seem so at first, but it becomes more frustrating later in the game when you need to make more accurate jumps. The game isn't too difficult, so it ultimately doesn't matter a ton, but it was still frustrating. On a related note, the platforming struggles with some of the jumps seemingly being more strict than the sprites make it seem. I'd fall and take damage, even though it certainly looks like I landed solidly on ground. That kind of thing. Slight spoi…

This is a shot (very short) LADX clone with tight controls, good story and atmosphere, and fun bosses. The 'darkness' mechanic can be a little annoying at first but the game is very fair about letting you see what you need to see and it doesn't detract from the experience at all. Overall worth the price of admission.

Short, sweet, and well done little game, with enough variety and puzzles to keep you engaged for several hours.. Only con is there are no sound options, so be prepared to have your ears blasted off.

It's short and sweet. The controls feel better than I expected for a game originally designed for the playdate.

I agree with some of the other reviews, the platforming isn't great. It's a bit frustrating. That being said, everything else about this game hits pretty near the same as Link's Awakening or the Oracle games whilst also still being its own unique game. Great little game, had a ton of fun. 100%ed it and thoroughly enjoyed my time.
