RBM Studio's Gettysburg

--> This game works in Manjaro Linux without proton or wine! <-- I picked this game up along with Waterloo and didn't think much of it. I am just starting to get into war games and this seemed like a logical choice. I was right. This game grabbed my attention right away. What looks like a bare bone and boring war game IS NOT. The AI is top notch and will clean your clock if you're not paying attention! The strategy here is placing your troops, sharpshooters and headquarters in just about the right places and attack if need be. The dice rolls are a nice touch and randomize the outcome of each battle. When you THINK you've won any specific battle those rolls can make or break you so paying attention to where your troops are set can make a MASSIVE difference on the outcome of the battles. This game is well written, clean graphically and has some really nail biting outcomes. I highly recommend this game to anyone learning war gaming as well as more seasoned folks. You might be surprised just how devious and clever this was programmed and created! Well done developers! I like this game very much!

A light, basic board game conversion. Great quick filler game but no grand strategy and little depth. Worth it for a quick scrap though.

This is a purposely-simple game originally designed to serve as an intro to tabletop hex-and-counter wargaming. IMO it does a great job of that. After you get bored of this, try out their Waterloo game, and then from there try out their Rebel Fury game. All of them use similar mechanics so it's relatively easy to move from one to the next. Update: The more I play this, the more impressed I am with it. It took me several attempts to win as the Union. The AI is really quite good. A few things I learned were that, first of all, it's very important to understand the victory conditions where whoever inflicts more elimination results on the other wins, but the Union wins ties. So at the beginning, the onus is really on the Confederates to inflict a loss on the Union. And the Union really just needs to deny that to the Confederates, or if the Confederates do get an elimination result, the Union can use one of their stronger units to attack one of the weaker Confederate units in order to get an elimination result. One thing that kept happening to me as the Union was that I would leave my cavalry kind of hanging out front, and it would get surrounded and eliminated because cavalry can…

"Player suffers an exploding caisson" one battle in three. God only knows how the Civil War was fought for so long with such shoddy artillery ammunition. Now as the Confederates, I can't win a single engagement because the Union Army gets fives or sixes on the die every time, thirteen times in a row in this particularly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. This was clearly written by someone with a political axe to grind. The board game never reached this level of nonsense.

Not a game for experienced war gamers. Fine for newbies and children.
