A voice is saying your name. A WWII-era machine, long hidden in a church basement, whirs to life. Through a crackling speaker, a man asks you to find a stolen book. He only knows the title. Time is running out. The machine, created by Bletchley Park engineers Cecil Caulderly and Beatrice Dooler, contains a vast archive of obscure books, letters, and journals fed in over the span of fifty years in an attempt to crack the code of reality. As their lives fell apart, the machine kept working. Navigate the computer’s archive. Link its obscure texts and uncover its creators’ secrets. Communicate with the man behind the speaker to figure out your role in this mystery. Destroy the book at the core of the machine — before it’s too late.
TR-49 takes inspiration from narrative deduction games like The Roottrees are Dead, The Return of the Obra Dinn, Type Help and Her Story, and from audio dramas like The Magnus Archives and ars PARADOXICA. I really want to like this game, but I just can't. I can tell there is an amazingly interesting puzzle game in front of me that I am not allowed to play, because every 5 seconds I hear the sound of radio static and the "give me a line of dialogue" button at the bottom of the screen starts flashing. Then I press it and get 1-2 sentences of deliberately nebulous plot exposition that actually seems really cool and right up my alley from a "modern technological eldritch horror" standpoint (think Laundry Files), but at the same time is veering dangerously close to just being "rich people bad because rich". I would ignore it if I could, but I keep getting tags for names and events in my journal as I listen to this, so I presume that will be required to solve things at some point. If all this was a massive 30 minute cutscene at the beginning of the game that would be one thing, but right now I feel like I just spent 20 minutes listening to an audio drama that pauses itself every 10 seconds and makes me press play again. I am going to walk away from this for a bit and try again once I've calmed down. I did see another review say the whole game isn't like this, so maybe if I stick with it…1 found this helpful
Wonderful wonderful game. I need more of these intriguing, family centered, kinda high stakes but also beaurocratic games. It's such a difficult balance to strike. I would have played it with the same passion if it was thrice the lenght. I love having a notebook on the side when I play so that I can think and figure out stuff. Thank you fondly.
A beautiful little mind-bender. I really need to stop finishing things like this in one sitting. Gems should be savored. If you liked Obra Dinn, pick it up. If you like mystery, good fiction, and reality manipulation, pick it up. Hell, if you like reading about old Bletchley Park exploits, pick it up.
Absolutely stunning. One of the best games I've played recently; the story genuinely nearly made me shed a few tears. Still terribly upset there's no 'Abbi meets Liam IRL' ending, but okay.. Beautiful voice acting anyways, and I was really surprised that trying to exhaust the dialogue had consequences. Overall will 100% recommend.
An enjoyable experience, intruigue, logic, puzzling, well written, well acted, and a satisfying experience. Short but well worth the experience.
This was a very interesting, story-driven game! Does not have action or horror, so be warned!
