Re.Surs

Re.Surs is an unusual story, not just because of the game, but because it seems to be a somewhat genuinely, sincerely made game, yet the developer felt it necessary to go to the good old Russian paid/fake review farm and get fake reviews for the game. That nasty review manipulation which has given this game a fake "mostly positive" review score is certainly enough for me to warn gamers away, after all, we should not want to buy games from morally bankrupt, unethical developers such as this. However, there is a game here, admittedly not much of one, but there is a game. It's a hybrid 2D side view adventure game and 2D side view platformer/shooter type arcade game (think Metal Slug only not as good). There's even a backstory and narrative. This is the kind of game that should at least be able to stand on its own two feet, yet, vexingly, the fake reviews are there, and not even a small number of them, enough to be far beyond the margin of error (fake reviewers are encouraged to buy and review other games to muddy the water and further disguise their activities). After playing (and loving) VidyGames' most recent game; Plastomorphosis, which, although being a very different style of game (old school survival horror), takes place in the same world as Re.Surs, I found myself very curious about the world building and lore here, so I wanted to explore further. This game has a fantastic aesthetic and soundtrack, and some pretty cool gameplay. I was god awful at the game, much to my disappointment, something about how it works intrigued me but simply didn't click. Luckily, easy mode exists and makes the game probably too easy to be honest but given how hard I found it on the regular difficulty I was totally okay with it. Pretty cool game with an interesting plot. If you've played Plastomorphosis already then this game does help build that world up quite a lot. Worth a look!

Re.Surs is a very ambitious game in terms of lore, setting and story. But it’s held back by technicalities and writing to make it go all out. You have 16 chapters where the gameplay is mostly fighting enemies vaguely similar to Final Fight games, there is some simple hacking, a tiny amount of platforming and 2-3 vehicle sections. You can play with 3 characters that you can switch to from a menu, they have unique moves and skills that help keep the fights a bit fresh. The achievements are mostly related to completing the game with about 5-6 being optional/secrets. It took me around 4.8 hours to get all the achievements. As mentioned, the game’s ambitiousness is really impressive. It makes you want to learn more about the story/world due to the way it’s presented. There are lots of environments that have different settings, making you feel like you’re on a grand adventure. The sound effects, mixing and music are pretty great actually. I like many of the ideas the game has and I like what the developer is trying to do with the gameplay. Terrible controls.

Re.Surs positions players within a gritty world of futuristic cities and paranormal mysteries, blending investigative themes with frantic, high-density enemy encounters. Combat relies heavily on the ability to swap between unique characters during active firefights to maximise tactical variety against swarms of aggressive, supernatural foes. Managing these distinct skill sets becomes second nature once the initial adjustment to the complex control scheme concludes. Teleportation beacons and protective energy shields allow for aggressive positioning, while the frequent health drops during demanding boss encounters encourage players to maintain an offensive momentum rather than retreating. Dynamic musical compositions elevate the sense of urgency, evoking the pulsing energy famously associated with the *Hotline Miami* series. These tracks sustain the atmosphere perfectly as the scenery transitions from urban sci-fi corridors into the increasingly surreal, nightmarish landscapes found within the mysterious underworld environment. Re.Surs is quite rough around most of its edges but for me it clicked more often than not. The broader game loop's rhythm suits me perfectly: burst of intense arena action (with unusually restricted move/skill set) — short puzzle/platform/story break — repeat. The action mechanics have some interesting ideas, even if they don't quite gel together in the end. Same with presentation and narrative. Can't recommend it unconditionally but it's an interesting little tidbit. If its aesthetics feel like your jam, give it a try.
