SEEP Universe, developed and published by SEEP, is a retro-inspired 2D action-platformer that pays clear homage to the arcade and console classics of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. Rather than attempting to modernize the genre with sprawling mechanics or cinematic storytelling, it focuses on delivering tightly structured levels, colorful pixel art, and energetic gameplay variety. The result is a game that feels deliberately nostalgic while still introducing enough variety to avoid becoming a simple imitation of its influences. From the outset, the game establishes its identity through vibrant sprite work and carefully constructed environments spread across multiple planets. Each world carries its own visual personality, with distinct backdrops, enemy designs, and hazards that reinforce the sense of traveling through a larger interconnected universe. The pixel art style is clean and expressive, evoking classic platformers while maintaining clarity and readability during fast-paced segments. Retro lives forever!!!

First commercial title from this duo of brothers who keep producing games to date, [b]SEEP Universe[/b] even casts themselves as the heroes, put into action by a bizarre premise to go through a few worlds with Mario 3 / World style maps. While I can feel their investment, it's clear their experience at the time didn't match, resulting in a game that barely scrapes the passable level - should rather be classified as "Mixed", but we all know Valve won't implement that, and a "Positive" would be too generous in my eyes. The amateurish and inconsistent quality of the graphics - which, besides NES games, also remind me of DOS platformers like [b]Commander Keen[/b] and [b]Bio Menace[/b] - is even endearing at times, but you'll soon realize that the biggest fight comes every single moment from the iffy jumping physics. Control sensitivity isn't much better; missing jumps is quite frequent, as is inadvertently falling into deadly hazards because the character moves much more than a quick touch in a direction should entail. Pixel games today are often modern games with the pixel look worn like a retro t-shirt. I first played Roar of Revenge from these devs and it was clear they knew what they were doing. So much so that I was willing to trust that this less polished appearance game would actually be worth it. As others have said, it's got authentically frustrating controls - games used to be hard. It's also been noted the 'getting that just a bit further' balance, again hard to achieve and they have it here. I got this on discount, but even so, there are two whole things here; the platformer and the shooter. That makes it more than enough value. I have put four hours in and not finished either mode. A solid indie title many will underestimate due to the crudity of the visuals. But I'd take that any day over £30 nonsense people rave over with gorgeous retro graphics but no game worth a damn underneath it
