16bit vs Reality is a retro-inspired platforming game with a unique twist of using two contradicting visual styles.

It’s a story of an ordinary gamer, who’s ordinary Tuesday morning suddenly turned into a thrilling challenge where the power of imagination is his only weapon against a dull grey world where “video-games are evil”. Make your way through the big grey city, defeat evil bosses and uncover the secret behind the gloomy joyless reality.

Making this game we drew inspiration from the 16bit classics that we used to play when we were kids. We sought to bring in all the things that made those games so cool. With a fast-paced action, fluid controls and challenging platforming this game is both a parody and a love letter to the gaming industry.

Game features

  • Good old classic platforming action.
  • Tight and responsive controls.
  • Variety of gameplay styles from typical run-and-gun to riding the roof of a subway train.
  • Find all the hidden gaming relics and discover your real enemy.
  • Two distinctly different visual styles in one game. Grey and dull visuals of the surrounding world versus colorful retro-styled pixel-art.
  • Two difficulty settings with an additional secret boss!
  • A unique soundtrack. filled with drive and energy. Rocking music tracks specially composed and recorded for the game turned into awesome 16bit-style chiptune versions of themselves.
  • Love!.. that we put into making this game.

16bit vs Reality takes us back to the tube TV times, the start is smooth and makes you ambitious to progress and soon after you will experience the real challenges with classic accuracy and timing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1msu3pXZ4E

Whenever you go into an "unknown" game like this, you are always hesitant. I was pleasantly surprised. Although I'm early in the game everything seems to indicate tight controls and detailed environments. XD

Alright, I've played 8 hours, I think I have played enough to give a solid review I do not enjoy playing platformers on mouse and keyboard so I decided I would use an Xbox controller, however unable to use the analog stick, I decided to bust out my Sn30 Pro for the authentic classic game experience. This game starts out simple, very simple, until the first boss, you will spend most of the time practically sightseeing and learning how the 16-bit transition changes the world as all enemies have very bland mechanics, and the maps do not challenge you very much. After the first boss things start to get a little more interesting, the maps start becoming the challenge more and more, while the enemies rather than being opponents become an obstacle to work around with eliminating them as an option. The next boss, the "other player" is the first time I had a genuinely hard time I had with this game, and it was far from the last. I found myself nearly rage quitting after attempting levels over and over to complete them. Keeping in mind that I do not consider myself "good" at platform games, this still seemed like a worthy challenge for players who want a difficult challenge. I recommend…

Cool art style and a nice perspective changing gimmick, but in terms of gameplay this one's missing the last 30 years of innovation in the genre. Think battle toads with less satisfying combat and just as much desire to milk you for quarters.
