serial experiments l-If-e is a very unusual game, and I think it works best when I treat it as a fan made side story rather than a conventional RPG. It is heavily inspired by Serial Experiments Lain and mixes dungeon exploration with a story that feels dreamlike, strange and deliberately uncomfortable. I liked how quickly it creates that familiar but unsettling atmosphere without trying to explain everything to me. The gameplay is fairly simple. I explore dungeons, interact with characters and gradually uncover more of the scenario through conversations and events. There is not a huge amount of traditional combat or complicated systems to distract from the narrative, so most of my attention goes toward understanding what is happening. I actually liked that approach because the mysterious story is clearly the main reason to keep playing. The biggest strength for me is the way it mixes elements from both the anime and game versions of Serial Experiments Lain. The interpretation is clearly its own thing, but it still captures some of the same themes surrounding identity, isolation, reality and mortality. I enjoyed the feeling that I was uncovering fragments of something much larger …
