Shine Within

"Shine Within" is a somewhat poorly made 2D top down retro pixel "adventure" game with a trite and off-putting story involving a hero saving a world corrupted by monsters. The gameplay involves collecting items and solving puzzles in a 2D, cartoony setting, with some minigames and optional interactions with monsters. The puzzles aren't great, the story is worse (and feels like Google Translate was having a bad day) and the graphics are atrocious. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded [i]despite[/i] the bad graphics, not because of them. This is only free in a rudimentary sense... the developer has their hand out for a $4 USD "donation" for this as you're expected to buy soundtrack DLC from Steam to "support" the "developer"... digital panhandling. The "We have Undertale at home" type of game.

This game has so much lost potential It feels like someone had a concept for a neat story in their head, but simply didn't workshop it enough to turn it into something great

This game is way more unique than I expected, I like the fact that aside from the fake ending you don't have to decide the fate of every encounter with a monster like a sort of godlike being but just comforting them, and yes the Undertale influence shows but more than that I see many influences from Ib, a game that I loved very much. And the playable credits are one of the best seen in any videogame. A wonderful experience overall
