About Sigh of the Abyss

Step into the splendor of a Renaissance port city in Sigh of the Abyss, a dark fantasy visual novel with a choice-heavy narrative and optional, inclusive romances.

As the Envoy, you are the product of a bloody ritual—mortal in appearance, yet imbued with the monstrous powers of the Abyss.
The men and women that sacrificed their life for yours guide you with their whispers, showing you how squalor and excess coexist side to side, how most toil while a few feast.
Did the Abyss bestow upon you supernatural strength and agility? Do you have the power to manipulate the shadows and see what they see? Perhaps your dark gift is prying open the minds of others only to break them and have them do your bidding.
The four humors color the tone of your responses and your personality, from the carefree sanguine to the thoughtful phlegmatic, from the anxious melancholic to the fiery choleric.

Will you stay friends, turn into bitter rivals, or seek something more with your companions?
Alpheon seeks refuge in a dissolute life without responsibilities. Without a roof over her head, Sylas resorts to crime to survive. Malec has been entrusted with a blood-stained legacy. As mages, Marané and Ascanio are shackled by their power to a life of isolation.
Pick the romantic preferences of the protagonist to determine who will flirt with you and reciprocate your affection: see only the kind of romantic content you want.
Ever-expanding and always craving for more, the city of Carolise spills out of its walls. Lavish trading posts are established while beggars and vagrants watch, and the divide between nobles and peasants grows into a rift. Who will you save and who will you condemn?
  • Customize the protagonist's name, skills and romantic preferences
  • Experience a branching narrative with hard choices and terrible consequences
  • Romance toggle: see only the romance content you want to see
  • Two female love interests, Sylas and Marané, and three male ones, Alpheon, Malec and Ascanio
  • Selected scenes are fully voice-acted by a stellar cast of VOs
  • A bespoke soundtrack with authentic historical character
  • Multiple detailed, expansive endings
  • Learn more about the rich setting of the game through codex entries

I've played through the game twice now, and I can confidently say it's probably the best visual novel I've ever played. The story is fascinating, the characters are intriguing, and I absolutely love the artstyle. I also love that the developer is super receptive to bug reports, I put in one not thinking it would even be seen (and frankly the bug required a pretty niche case) but lo and behold within a day the patch notes dropped to fix that bug. Amazing developer.

What first cought my eye before buying this game was the artstyle and it definitely didn't disappoint. I love the unique look this game has and it really stands out with art alone but when buying it to play before bedtime on my steam deck I was not prepared for this to become my absolute favourite visual novel. All the characters were so well written, it really felt like they were people with their own problems and lives. The story was very compelling and never felt like I was railroaded into anything. The voice acting was really nice, even if the whole thing isn't voice acted it's very helpful to be able to put a voice to the text even when just reading, I wish more visual novels did that. My personal favourite character was Sylas, she just kinda clicked with me and during her romance route even more so. Rascal Devworks thank you for making this.

beautiful, emotive artwork, couched in a really complex, thorny story about governance, magic, power, freedom and grief. also, insane to me that not everyone is choosing to live in absolute lesbian bliss with sylas and the (first of many) adopted cats, but y'all do y'all I guess.

I'd had this on my wishlist for a long time before I finally picked it up, and ended up enjoying it a lot more than I'd expected. The writing and characterization are pretty good, and the art and character designs are appealing. I like the almost oil-painting style of it. The storyline is decently long. There are some interesting ethical dilemmas to parse, especially closer to the endgame. I appreciated the ability to toggle the main character's interest in romantic partners and also that the resulting flirting-type conversation options were marked as such. The ways to solve problems (or not) can vary between playthroughs as you select which sort of abyss power to focus on, or which characters you've befriended/helped along the way. It flows fairly smoothly and I don't think I felt stuck in any of the four times I played. Also (and this is I guess more of a personal thing) I was worried about playing a woman-coded character in a fantasy-past setting, but it was fine. The main character doesn't necissarily read as cis-femme and the setting doesn't have a great deal of misogyny built into the cultures depicted which was honestly refreshing. So if "playing as a woman" usually b…

So happy I bought this game and got to experience all the the amazing storybuilding and beautiful art of it. I got 13 hours of gameplay for my first run (no reruns to get with the other LIs or achievements yet) so I would say that this is definitely worth the money game time-wise. It is beautifully written, the art is gorgeous and you get thrown in a intrigue that will make you hold your breath until the very last chapter without feeling like it's milking every plotpoint either. I could not stop playing and I actually will be playing again to try a different run for my Envoy, a different love interest... The story is so interesting and they provide so many lore entries in the logs, I spent a lot of time just reading them to get to know the universe better. I truly recommend it!
