Disappointing evolution of a classic As someone who still proudly remembers clearing the screen and dominating the classic era, I really wanted to love this. I know it’s in Early Access, but right now, it completely misses the mark of what made Speedball II a masterpiece. First, the camera angles are a mess. There are only two modes, and neither gives you that crucial, classic top-down view that made the original so tactical. The gameplay shift also feels like a massive step backward. The original Speedball was absolute perfection with just 8-way directional control and contextual short or long button presses. This modern iteration tries to use 7 or 8 different inputs, and the result is just incredibly wooden and clunky. As a standalone, generic 'violent steel stadium ballsport,' it might eventually find its footing. But it completely lacks the spirit, soul, and rhythm of Speedball. It’s gone from a lightning-fast, slick, and intuitive experience to something that feels inherently bland and unwieldy. Honestly, a straight, polished port of the classic game with upgraded visuals and minor refinements would have been infinitely more satisfying than this. I love this game. It's great. I remember playing this game on my pc many decades ago and this is the first version I've seen for pc since then. I fell in love with this game way back then and this version is better than ever. League mode is great. I love the ability to build your own team. Super fast paced just like the original but with many new options, capabilities, venues, AI, Etc.....2 found this helpful
solid as steel.
Fun game! If you're craving Cyberball nostalgia, then this will scratch the itch enough to get the job done. Plus, you get to unlock a Judge Dredd team...nuff said.
Another updated Amiga classic I bought recently (alongside the Alien Breed trilogy) that stays true to the original gameplay. Its fun and retains the core mechanics plus some extra tricks. Probably very good as a 2-player sharing the screen, which will be where the most fun is. My only real criticism is that instead of instant replays we get celebrations dances. An update adding replays would be great.
