Square Brawl

It feels like we're going the hipster way by choosing to praise "Square Brawl" out of all the big hitters that Landfall so consistently releases, but this is a very earnest review. We got this game a bit less than a decade ago. It wasn't a big hit, but it was surely a fun time. Simple at its core: choose two weapons (your strategy will drastically change depending on what you choose) and go brawl. It cuts to the chase and it delivers on what it promises: a thrilling battle that will have y'all laughing and holding your breath when you're one hit away from dying or winning. It's, simply put, a great local multiplayer game. Recently, we were choosing what to play during our lunch break and I suggested giving Square Brawl a go, and no matter how many years had passed since last time we played it, we found ourselves having a blast once again. While it's unlikely that Landfall will surprise us all with a "Square Brawl 2" (fingers crossed, though), I am sincerely happy to see that the creators of such a hidden gem have found so much success. It's oh so well deserved.

Unplayable on the Steam Deck unlike other local multiplayer games of this style (Rounds and Stick Fight mainly). A resolution menu pops up when booting requiring you to undock the deck and press buttons via touchscreen. When you're in the game, multiple controllers control the menu selection (again, bad for party games of this style). When in game, the pause menu would regularly pop up (Couldn't figure out if it was us or the game). One controller will often control *everyone's* input including weapon selection and in-game movement, requiring you to restart the game and deal with the resolution menu again, meaning undocking the deck. I'll be refunding since I didn't get what I was hoping for out of this game. I really do like the abilities and combat mechanics, and the ability to combine different weapons made for fun builds. Everything is pretty simple but it gets very chaotic with 4 players. I'll happily update my review if the shared/split screen functionality gets fixed.

Awful controls. Could not enjoy it and never launched it again. Some games are only fun with friends, but this one is not even fun with friends. Its just bad. Get their newer games like Rounds.

Really nice for Remote Play and/or game night with friends/family at home.

Had hundreds hours of fun playing this with my brother. Still playing every now and then till this day. My favorite landfall game.
