Super Ember Kaboom

This is a pretty adorable nibble of an homage to [b] Mario Bros. 3 [/b] minus the raccoon suit. The levels are [i] very [/i] short, taking about a minute or two to complete, and each have a checkpoint in the middle. The entire game took me about [b] 1.5 hours [/b] to finish. There are [b] no achievements. [/b] Probably best on sale but it was a cute little after-dinner mint following some heavier stuff.

Flashy, adrenaline endorsing, highly addicting, super easy and very fun.

Super Ember Kaboom is a cute platforming game where you control a small fox girl across many levels. Along with a tail swipe attack, you can collect elemental abilities that allow you to shoot an effect at enemies, such as fireballs or ice trails. Collecting fruit will grant you lives when you get enough. Each level has secret gems as well which are required to unlock various pathways on the world map. There are also a few "Shadow Mario" style levels where an illusion follows your every move, which will hurt you if it ever comes into contact with you. It is a very simple to play but that also helps make it fun and stress free to play. It is easy to pick up, play through, and have a good time with it.

However, its over-reliance on text-heavy lore at the outset disrupts the pacing. While the controls are tight and responsive, the story feels shoehorned in, detracting from the game's swift tempo. Despite solid pixel art and sound design, enemy encounters lack impact, often leading players to bypass them altogether. The fair price and controller support enhance the experience, though level design could benefit from refinement. While enjoyable, Super Ember Kaboom leaves room for improvement in balancing its narrative and gameplay elements for a more cohesive experience.

This is the second game I've played from this developer. Super Ember Kaboom is a fun platformer with lots of very short levels and really pretty graphics. I like the basic gameplay mechanics. However, none of the levels really stuck with me, since they’re very short and the enemies and obstacles are all very similar. The difficulty level is well balanced. Later levels are harder than earlier ones, but still manageable. The game offers about two hours of gameplay. It’s good that it doesn’t go on any longer, since it felt repetitive to me toward the end. Two things bothered me the whole time: The camera was very close to the character, so you couldn’t see far ahead to see what was coming. As with his other game, the controls aren’t fully implemented. I couldn’t close the game normally. The developer uses the Game Maker tool “Construct” and apparently used asset packs. He integrated the assets well. I think solo devs are cool in general, but if he’s using so many pre-made assets, he could polish the rest of the game a bit more.

[/quote] [h2]Great game, levels are a bit short[/h2] Super Ember Kaboom is a charming, fast-paced platformer in which you rush to the end as quickly or slowly as you choose, unless you're being chased by monsters or your shadow then you gotta go fast, using powers and avoiding enemies. I enjoy it; it's very active and entertaining, but each level is only around 1-3 minutes long, which makes me want a little more depth; maybe the later levels will have more content. Still a wonderful game if you're searching for something quick.
